INSTALLATION OF DEWATERING PIT PUMPS

C.1. SUMMARY OF WORK

a. General. At each lock location (Eisenhower and Snell), there are three dewatering pumps: two large and one small. The small pump (No. 3 Pump) at each lock location shall be replaced in this scope of work. The Corporation has procured Goulds manufactured pumps from Great Lakes Pump & Supply (248-266-2249) for the contractor to replace the No. 3 Pumps.

It is the responsibility of the Contractor to coordinate exact equipment installation requirements with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Plugging of Discharge Piping: At each location, the No. 3 Pump discharges into a 6” cast iron pipe that is cast in place in the concrete wall of the pump room. The pipe then joins the other two larger pumps which discharge into a common duct. The main discharge duct subsequently discharges approximately 18 feet below water line near the lock’s north lower approach wall downstream of the lower miter gates. In order to prevent water ingress from below the water line, the Contractor shall procure a through-the-valve inflatable pipe plugging device for a 6” cast iron pipe such as a Petersen Products™ 126-106-X system or equal. The device shall be turned over to the Corporation at the conclusion of the project. This device is designed to bolt to the face of the existing gate valve after the check valve is removed, be inserted, and seal the inside of the 6” discharge pipe at the wall temporarily while facilitating replacement of the 6” coupling, 6” gate valve, and 6” check valve that are also provided by the Corporation. It is strongly recommended that the Contractor follow the plugging device manufacturer’s recommendations for use of the device.

Pump & Plumbing Demolition: The existing 10hp pumps (one at Eisenhower Lock and one at Snell Lock) shall be removed from service and replaced with new 40hp pumps. The pump discharge head and column are similar in size to the original, the main difference being the new pump discharge flange is 8” instead of 6”. This will be accounted for with a welded eccentric reducer in the discharge pipe. The existing lower pump column is attached low on the wall of the lower dewatering pit with brackets and concrete anchors. These shall be removed and replaced with new stainless-steel units by the Contractor when the new pumps are installed. The existing 6” discharge piping and all valves, check valves and appurtenant fittings shall be removed. This discharge piping will terminate at a Hymax™ style coupling that attaches to a cast-in-place 6” cast iron pipe stub in the wall of the pump room. This stub shall remain in place and be cleaned in accordance with the coupling manufacturer’s instructions.

Baseplate Field Drilling/Tapping & Coating: The existing baseplate is a 1” thick plate approximately 28” square in dimension. At the Eisenhower Lock location, the existing removable pump mounting flange has been modified from the original (smaller) and is on a different bolt pattern. The original 25” square bolt pattern shall be restored by drilling and tapping holes for four (4) ¾”-10 fasteners in the baseplate. The baseplate is cast in concrete.

The Snell Lock location appears to be the same bolt pattern as original. The Contractor shall verify and make required modification, if any. Prior to new pump installation, the existing baseplate shall be cleaned, prepared, and coated with Sherwin-Williams Sherloxane 800 (black) coating system or approved equal per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Dewatering Pit Cleaning: The dewatering pit sump areas shall be cleaned of all sediment and debris prior to new pump installation. This includes sump areas for all three pumps in each dewatering pit, not just the new pumps’ sump areas. The lock drains will continue to discharge water into the bottom of the dewatering pits, temporary submersible pumps of sufficient size shall be required to be installed and ensured to have continual operability to allow dewatering of the pit while work is being performed. Rainy conditions will increase water discharge into the dewatering pit. The water may be pumped up and over the lock wall and discharged in a way that does not directly strike passing ships. At all times, the Contractor shall make provisions to ensure dewatering pit water being temporarily discharged by his/her pumps is not contaminated with oil or other contaminants.

New Pump Electrical & Plumbing Installation: New pumps shall be installed and electrically wired. A local disconnect will be provided and installed by Corporation next to the No. 3 Pump for Contractor connection.

The Contractor shall provide a matching plug on the end of a cord to connect pump to local disconnect receptacle. The pump shall also be plumbed with all new piping, valves, couplings, fittings, and appurtenances in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. This may require field welding/fabrication. See the Contract Drawings for detailed layout. Any new plumbing items shall be prepared and coated with Sherwin-Williams Sherloxane 800 (black) coating system or approved equal per the manufacturer’s recommendations. The coatings shall be provided by the Contractor. The new pumps have a ¾” thick steel adapter plate that makes them approximately that much taller than the original pump. This moves the discharge centerline up by the same amount, and the height difference shall be made up with the Corporation supplied eccentric weld reducer in the discharge header such that it mates up appropriately to the 6” cast iron discharge stub centerline in the wall of the pump room. Field fitting of pipes by the Contractor will be required. All dimensions shall be field verified by the Contractor in advance of performing work. The elevation difference shall not be allowed to simply be made up with coupling misalignment.

Startup and Commissioning: The Contractor shall hire the OEM pump manufacturer or manufacturer’s approved representative (or original distributor Great Lakes Pump & Supply) to be on site for testing, startup, and commissioning of the new pump system performance. There is also a controls integration aspect to this job. The control system integration is an extension of a previous dewatering pit control upgrade project done by Aqualogics. If a systems integrator other than Aqualogics is to be used, the contractor must submit references of experience with Aqualogics controls systems, along with a controls integration plan to be reviewed by the Corporation. The Contractor shall provide support to Aqualogics or systems integrator as needed, to finalize various wiring modifications from switching from the existing No. 3 Pumps to newly installed one. The Contractor shall coordinate and give ample notification for startup and commissioning work with the COR to allow for Government electrical and mechanical maintenance personnel to be present.

This shall occur during normal business hours during a weekday(s) that are not Federal Holidays.

Concrete Hatch Cover Sill Demolition, Reinstallation, and Sealing: Each dewatering pit location has one smaller, and two larger hatch covers that allow removal of the three pumps. These cover sills consist of welded 7” steel angle construction and shall be demolished and replaced with new Corporation furnished materials. This will require concrete demolition and replacement.

The large covers are 4’-6” x 3’-2” approximate inner dimensions, and the small covers are 24” square approximate inner dimensions. Field welding to existing anchorages will be required. See contract and reference drawings for details. In the event that the rebar dowels welded to the outside of the sill frame interfere with an existing above ground structure, an approved flat head sleeve anchor may be used in that local area. When work is complete, the Contractor shall install and seal all three hatch covers according to the details in the reference drawings. The Contractor shall verify pertinent dimensions in advance of performing work.
