1. Description Or Purpose of Engagement:
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), Bureau of Climate and Environmental Health (BCEH) seeks support to build upon existing efforts to improve the accessibility, interpretation, and use of cancer incidence data by local health officials throughout the Commonwealth.
DPH currently provides readily available cancer incidence data through its Massachusetts Environmental Public Health Tracking website and the DPH Cancer Incidence City & Town Dashboard, an online tool released in February 2025 and developed by BCEH in partnership with the Massachusetts Cancer Registry (MACR). However, the ability of local health officials to interpret and translate the data into public health action is generally limited.
Through this engagement, DPH aims to leverage its partnership with the Barnstable County Health Department and, by extension, the Massachusetts Epidemiologists Collaborative, to develop supplemental resources that facilitate the interpretation and application of cancer incidence data by local health officials across Massachusetts. Building on technical assistance provided by BCEH to Barnstable County in 2024 and lessons learned through the County’s efforts to develop community-level cancer incidence data tools, the partnership will help shape the design, format, and content of resources intended to supplement existing sources of cancer incidence data. The resources developed through this engagement are intended for use by local health officials across Massachusetts.
The purpose of this work is to better enable local health officials statewide to respond to community-based cancer concerns, communicate cancer incidence data appropriately, and inform community-specific initiatives to reduce the burden of cancer. The resulting resources are intended to support local health departments across Massachusetts by promoting consistent, sustainable, and actionable use of cancer incidence data in public health practice. This engagement will support implementation of both responsive and proactive approaches to cancer surveillance, consistent with recommendations outlined in the CDC/ATSDR Guidelines for Examining Unusual Patterns of Cancer and Environmental Concerns (2022) and will advance DPH’s efforts to strengthen local capacity to address cancer-related environmental public health concerns.
2. Whether Single Or Multiple Contractors Are Required For Engagement(s)
