About this file
This is a Technical Requirements Document issued by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory for procurement of an ultrasonic flaw detector system.
The equipment will be used for non-destructive testing (NDT) of welds on the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) horn inner conductor components. The components are manufactured from 6000s aluminum alloy using TIG welding, with wall thickness of 0.2 inches and outer diameters ranging from 3.379 to 21.799 inches. The welds are qualified to NAS 1514 radiographic inspection standards with a void size limit of 0.03 inches. The system must detect voids as small as 0.005 inches in aluminum with wall thickness between 0.1 and 0.375 inches.
The required equipment must be a portable unit with a 64:128 pulser/receiver architecture (64 independently controllable phased-array pulser channels and 128 independently controllable receiver channels) capable of performing multiple ultrasonic inspection methods including phased array ultrasonics (PAUT) with linear, sectorial, and compound beam types, single ultrasonic beam (UT), time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD), total focusing method (TFM), phase coherence imaging (PCI), full matrix capture (FMC), and plane wave imaging (PWI). The unit must operate on field-replaceable batteries and support continuous operation from external AC power (120V, 60Hz), include onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, provide a built-in display, contain at least 500 GB of onboard storage, offer USB 3.1, HDMI, SDHC card slot, and Ethernet ports, support preset configuration for different applications, enable remote PC operation, accommodate custom PAUT probes and wedges, and be capable of inspecting materials up to 100 mm thickness. The manufacturer must provide software updates, technical support, and repair/replacement support through at least January 1, 2032, or demonstrate that its immediately preceding generation of comparable equipment received minimum five-year manufacturer support.

Ultrasonic Flaw Detector Technical Requirements Document
Ultrasonic Flaw Detector Technical Requirements Document
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 2
Application
This equipment will be used to NDT welds on the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) horn inner conductor components. These components are TIG welded via a welding lathe. The components are made from 6000s aluminum alloy. The wall thickness at the weld joint is 0.2” and the outer diameters range 3.379” – 21.799”. The welds are strictly qualified to NAS 1514 radiographic inspection which has a void size limit of 0.03”. The finished inner conductor weldment poses a challenge to send offsite for radiographic inspection thus the desire to ultrasonically inspect the finished welds
Requirements
The equipment and accessories must meet the following minimum requirements. Vendor proposals are to be reviewed by the requester or delegated FNAL technical point of contact prior to award. Vendor proposal must clearly state any deviation from the minimum requirements.
• Detect voids as small as 0.005” in 6000s alloy aluminum with wall thickness 0.1” - 0.375”.
• Enable probes that can adapt to the 3.379” – 21.799” outer diameters.
• The equipment shall be a portable unit capable of phased array ultrasonics (PAUT) beam types (linear, sectorial, and compound), single ultrasonic beam (UT), time-of-flight-diffraction ultrasonics (TOFD), total focusing method (TFM), phase coherence imaging (PCI), full matrix capture (FMC), and plane wave imaging (PWI).
• The unit shall operate from field-replaceable batteries and shall be capable of continuous operation from an external AC power source suitable for conventional 120 V, 60 Hz facility power. Battery replacement shall be possible without requiring permanent removal of the instrument from service.
• The equipment shall have a 64:128 pulser/receiver architecture, consisting of 64 independently controllable phased-array pulser channels and 128 independently controllable phased-array receiver channels.

• The unit shall have onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
• The unit shall have at a minimum the following ports: 1x USB 3.1, 1x video out (HDMI), 1x
SDHC memory card slot, 1x Ethernet.
• The unit shall have a built-in display.
• The device must have at least 500 GB of onboard storage.
• The unit shall have the ability to configure presets for different applications. The unit shall locally save the presets for usage. It is recommended that the presets could also be made on a PC.
• The unit shall support remote operation and acquisition from a PC.
• The system shall support manufacturer-developed custom PAUT probes and wedges, including custom probe and wedge definitions/configurations for inspection geometries not accommodated by the manufacturer's standard probe library.
• The system shall be capable of performing PAUT/TFM/PCI inspections on welds or components with material thicknesses up to 100 mm for other FNAL applications.
• The manufacturer shall provide software updates, technical support, and replacement/repair support for the proposed equipment through at least January 1, 2032.
The manufacturer shall provide evidence of its planned support period upon request. If the proposed product does not have a published support lifecycle extending through January 1, 2032, the offeror shall provide documentation demonstrating that the manufacturer's immediately preceding generation of equipment with comparable inspection capabilities received manufacturer support for a minimum of five years.
