About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document for Solicitation RFP 380520RLP addressing clarifications for a platform procurement.
Fermilab requires an aluminum-frame platform with composite grating designed to support four people for indoor use with no chemical or salt exposure. The structure must feature a 42-inch guard rail height, safety swing gates at each end that are spring-loaded, and round pipes for guard rails are acceptable. The platform's total height cannot exceed 144 inches and legs must bolt onto the platform. The structure requires a Professional Engineer (PE) stamp and must be anchored to the ground using base plates with four holes for Hilti Kwik Bolt TZ2 Wedge ½-inch ground anchors. Seismic code considerations apply for northern Illinois only. Fermilab will provide ladders and final assembly at their facility; the platform may be shipped in smaller assemblies. The finish must be safety yellow powder coat, with aluminum being preferred and not requiring galvanization or coating, though bidders offering yellow powder coating receive preference. All handrails and visible components should be powder coated yellow rather than gray. Access to the platform will be via Fermilab-provided ladders bolted to neighboring structures.

Questions & Answers
Questions: Answers:
. Please advise desired material / construction.
a. If none is specifically desired, please advise usage of location (indoors, outdoors, indoors chemical exposure, outdoors high salt exposure), etc
Strictly indoors, no chemicals, no salt exposure.
Fermilab prefers lightweight materials as product might be removed at times.
Will this platform be in a seismic area? Consider seismic codes for buildings in northern Illinois only.
Is a ladder and / or ladder mount required? Fermilab will provide ladder.
Are pad / anchor designs and kits required as part of this scope?
Only base plates with four (4) holes for Hiliti Kwik Bolt TZ2 Wedge ½” ground anchors.
Is it acceptable for final assembly of the platform to be required for shipping and handling purposes?
The platform can come in smaller assemblies that will be final assembled at Fermilab.
What type of coating is required? Do we need to prime & paint or galvanize all the parts of the platform?
Painted safety yellow.
Would round pipes instead of square tubes for guard rails be acceptable?
Yes.
Can this be aluminum or is steel the requirement? Aluminum frame for light weight and composite grating if it meets the loads of four (4) people.
Is this intending to be anchored to the ground? Yes.
Will it need a PE stamp? Yes.
How would individuals access the platform? There will need to be a safety swing gate at each end. Fermilab will provide a ladder, bolted to other structures in intended location.
Do these platforms need any sort of egress?
Ladder, Stairs, etc.?
Fermilab will provide ladders. They will be fixed to other structures in the neighboring area.
Is there a preference in top of walk surface between 99” or 108”? Would railings at 42” above the walk surface be acceptable?
Yes. If the total structure height is no more than 144”.
What will be the finish, galvanized or power coated?
Aluminum is preferred and cannot be galvanized.
It does not need to be coated. There is advantage to bidder who will powder coat safety yellow.
Do the gates need to be spring loaded or latched? Spring loaded.
For the guard rails, drawing says 40” max, but specs request rail requirement height at 42”, please clarify.
42”.
Do the legs bolt onto the platform? Yes.
Are the handrails powder coated yellow and the base gray?
Yellow.
