2.2 Background and Purpose

2.2.1 The MDOT MTA MARC Division requires the Prime Mover of MP36PH-3C Locomotive #10 be overhauled to an operating condition.

2.2.2 On August 23, 2019, MARC diesel locomotive #10 lost main engine oil pressure and shut down.

Preliminary analysis of the failure to the Prime Mover indicated the bearings for the #4 and #12 rods were fused to the crankshaft. The skirt of #4 piston was broken, and the crankshaft sustained damage.

2.2.3 The Prime Mover is an EMD16-645F3B-T2R type engine remanufactured in 2008. The engine underwent a similar repair back in 2014 when the #1 and #9 rods became disengaged from the crankshaft. At that time, the engine was completely disassembled and rebuilt, and the #1 and #9 power assemblies were replaced.

RFP MDOT MTA Page 3 of 68
