About this file

This file is a Workers' Compensation Claim Data report for the City of Austin, Texas, documenting workplace injuries and claims activity as of September 30, 2024. The spreadsheet contains detailed claim information across multiple city departments and divisions, including Austin Energy, Austin Resource Recovery, Code Compliance, and Austin Water Utility. The dataset encompasses claims filed between October 2019 and September 2024, with over 300 individual claim records detailing incident dates, loss dates, claim status, injury descriptions, and financial data. Claims are categorized by injury type, body part affected, cause of injury, and litigation status, with incidents ranging from minor contusions and strains to serious injuries including fractures, burns, and motor vehicle accidents.

The financial columns in the claim data capture paid amounts, reserves, and incurred costs broken down by indemnity/loss, medical, and expense categories. Claims are classified by status including pending, accepted, and closed determinations, with some claims in litigation as of the report date. Most claims show zero paid and reserved amounts, indicating they are either in initial investigation phases or pending approval. Several significant claims document accepted injuries with substantial medical and indemnity payments, such as a spinal injury claim with over $788,000 in total incurred costs and a motor vehicle accident claim with approximately $114,000 in total incurred costs. The data reveals common workplace hazards across city operations including falls, strain injuries from lifting and repetitive motion, heat-related illnesses in outdoor collection operations, animal and insect incidents, electrical contact, and motor vehicle collisions, supporting the city's need for comprehensive third-party workers' compensation administration services.
