INTRODUCTION

Under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC (FFDG), is leading the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Project to enable a world-class program in neutrino physics. Specifically, the LBNF Project (https://lbnf-dune.fnal.gov) provides the infrastructure for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), which will consist of two large liquid argon-based neutrino detectors located nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD. See Figure 1, LBNF/DUNE-US Schematic

The Far Detector & Cryogenics (FDC) subproject of LBNF/DUNE-US installs the cryostats, detectors, cryogenics and supporting infrastructure at the SURF laboratory.

Figure 1, LBNF/DUNE-US Schematic

This statement of work covers the procurement of two residual gas analyzers (RGA) with associated metering valves and pumping station. These units are used to sample the gas in the cryostat insulating volume to look for nitrogen or other contaminates.

STRUCTURE/COMPONENT DESCRIPTION

The DUNE cryostat is constructed with a fully enclosed foam insulating volume that is filled with argon gas. Leaks between this volume and the outside of the cryostat will result in air entering the insulating volume. To detect this the composition of the gas in the insulating volume needs to be monitored. As the expected N2 and O2 concentration is expected to be very low a sensitive measurement device is needed.

A residual gas analyzer (RGA) has been selected for this purpose. RGAs are sensitive to very low concentrations of impurities but require ultra-high vacuum (UHV) to operate, typically below 10-6 mBar.

To achieve this a high vacuum pump is required and a gas metering system to control the gas flow to the vacuum system is used.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

The vendor shall provide two RGA gas analysis stations meeting the following requirements:

RGA range 0-200 amu Software needed to operate/readout the RGA, to be installed and utilized on a local FFDG machine.

Software must store measured data.

Turbo pump based vacuum system with splinter shield at turbo input Oil Free backing pump Combined Pirani/ion gauges for pressure measurement and interlock to protect filaments in the RGA All controls needed for the pressure gauges, turbo pump and backing pump All cables needed to power and control the devices Ethernet interface for remote communication to the RGA and pump station.

Venting system to bring the system to atmosphere Needle valve for metering gas from atmospheric pressure to the UHV system

Controlled leak rate: to 10-10 Torr-l/s Vacuum range: Atmosphere to below 10-11 mbar Max Flow conductance: 6 l/min Agilant AMLV1635CF or similar metering valve proposed by vendor

Vacuum port (CF 25) for connecting ancillary equipment

POST-AWARD SUBMITTALS

The Subcontractor shall comply with the following requirements once subcontract award has been made.

• Owner’s manuals associated with the equipment

• Standard warranties

QUALITY CONTROL

The Subcontractor is responsible for all activities necessary to manage, control, and document work to ensure compliance with the subcontract documents. The Subcontractor’s responsibility includes ensuring adequate Quality Control services are provided for work accomplished on- and off-site by their organization, suppliers, sub-tier subcontractors, technical laboratories, and consultants.
