About this file

The document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) set for Amendment 3 to a Request for Information (RFI) titled "Space Weather (SW) Next Instruments for Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) and Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO)". The RFI is soliciting information from vendors to support the development of an acquisition strategy and a potential future Request for Proposal (RFP) to procure instruments for the SW Next Program.

The key details include the due dates for submitting RFI questions/comments (May 23, 2024) and responses (June 16, 2024), as well as the instruments of interest for the GEO and HEO observatories, such as in-situ particle flux sensors, magnetometers, EUV imagers, photospheric magnetograph imagers, heliospheric imagers, and auroral imagers. The document also addresses clarifications around pitch angle resolution requirements and power/mass specifications for the SWAP instrument. The notional launch dates for the GEO and HEO observatories are 2032, with mission lifetimes of 7 and 5 years, respectively.

RFI-SWO-GEOHEOIns-2024 Amendment 3 – Questions and Responses

Request for Information (RFI)

Title: Space Weather (SW) Next Instruments for Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) and Highly

Elliptical Orbit (HEO)

Date of Amendment 3 Post: May 24, 2024 Date of Amendment 2 Post: May 21, 2024 Date of Amendment 1 Post: May 21, 2024 Date Original Post: May 6, 2024 RFI Questions/Comments Due: May 23, 2024 at 11:59PM ET RFI Responses Due Date: June 7, 2024 at 11:59PM ET June 16, 2024 at 11:59PM ET

Question 1: Given recent clarifications, can the due date be extended by two weeks to June 21, 2024?

Answer 1: The date cannot be extended by two weeks but will be extended to June 16, 2024 at

11:59PM ET.

Question 2: Can the Government please clarify the data products of interest/geophysical parameters of interest for the visible channel on the Auroral Imager?

Answer 2: The visible light channel will provide qualitative information on the aurora such as the nightside boundary of the aurora.

Question 3: Given the Government’s clarification that the spacecraft will be three-axis stabilized, is the pitch angle resolution in Tables 4.1 and 4.3 still required? Could this be changed to “Angular Resolution”?

Answer 3: Pitch angle is the requirement, obtained from the instrument elevation angle + magnetic field information. Angular resolution alone is not sufficient.

Question 4: Are the values in the revised RFI Table 4.4 for the SWAP instrument for Power (2) W and Mass (3)Kg correct? These seem to be very small compared to those as a replacement instrument for the current GOES-R MPS-HI.

Answer 4: The SWAPs provided are not requirements. We are looking for a low SWAP instrument and trying to ascertain what is possible. The values listed were not based on current instruments. The mass and power values are correct.
