BACKGROUND

HRSA is an OPDIV under HHS that has a mission to improve health and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative programs. One of its primary goals is to provide health services to underserved areas in the United States. To do this, (BPHC) within HRSA funds health centers in underserved communities and urban locations across the United States providing access to high quality, family oriented, comprehensive primary and preventive health care for people who are low-income, uninsured or face other obstacles to getting health care. These health centers provide outpatient services including diagnosis, observation, treatment, and rehabilitation services. Health centers are community-based and patient-directed organizations that deliver comprehensive, culturally competent, high-quality primary health care services.

Health centers also often integrate access to pharmacy, mental health, substance abuse, and oral health services in areas where economic, geographic, or cultural barriers limit access to affordable healthcare services. Health centers deliver care to the nation’s most vulnerable individuals and families, including people experiencing homelessness, agricultural workers, residents of public housing, and the nation’s veterans.
