About this file

This document outlines the salient characteristics for a Multi-Domain Sensing System, detailing 31 technical and operational requirements for a distributed, low-power sensor network designed for perimeter security and intrusion detection.

The system must detect human presence and movement through multiple sensing modalities: seismic sensing for footsteps and vehicle movement (with customization for digging or aircraft detection), magnetic sensing for vehicle detection within 5 meters, passive infrared break-wire sensing for choke-point detection (70 meters for personnel, 200 meters for vehicles), and passive electronic signal detection. Sensors must achieve long-range detection capabilities of 100+ meters for human footsteps and 200+ meters for vehicle movement via seismic sensing. Individual sensor nodes are constrained to 325 cubic centimeters maximum volume and 350 grams maximum dry weight, with internal battery operation for over 24 months at 50 daily activations without charging or replacement. The system must meet IP-67 standards, support self-test and GPS self-location capabilities, and be deployable within 2 minutes with one-button operation. Security requirements include AES-256 encryption at the node level, minimum AES-128 encryption in transmission, and denial-of-service resistance. The system must support star topology communication up to 15 kilometers line-of-sight, integrate with Starlink and ZeroTier, and store minimum 300,000 sensor alarms for pattern-of-life analytics. The user interface must be browser-based, Windows-compatible, and operable on tablets and laptops with one day of training. Integration capabilities include third-party equipment integration into Cursor-on-Target ecosystem, ATAK and common operating picture platform compatibility, and remote IP-based sensor integration. The system must include minimum one-year warranty and software support with extension options up to four years.

2. Sensors need to be able to use seismic sensing to detect human footsteps and vehicle movement, and be capable of customization of seismic sensing for detection of digging, aircraft, or other specialized intrusion detection needs

3. Seismic sensing for vehicles and personnel must have range / sensitivity adjustment

4. Sensors must have the capability to detect vehicles within 5 meters via magnetic sensing

5. Sensors must be able to detect human and vehicle movement at choke-points via passive infrared

“break-wire” sensing

6. “Break-wire” sensor must detect human targets up to 70 m and vehicles up to 200 m.

7. System must be able to passively detect signals emitted from electronic devices.

8. Sensors need to last for over 24 months in the operating environment, with industry standard 50 activations per day, in the most economical power setting, without the need for battery charging / replacement

9. System must offer edge computing, encoding and AES 256 data encryption at the node and a minimum of AES 128 in transmission, and be resistant to denial-of-service attacks, resulting in low probability of detection, interference, or interception by individuals or third parties.

10. Sensors must be self-contained, operating on internal batteries without the need for external battery packs or cables.

11. Sensors must be lightweight and small, with sensor nodes being no larger than 325 cubic centimeters and having a dry weight of no more than 350 grams, so that they may be easily carried, emplaced, and concealed

12. Sensors must be capable of using long-range seismic human footstep and vehicle sensing -(100m+) for footstep and 200m+ for vehicle sensing

13. Sensors must be designed to meet IP-67 standards for water/dust intrusion

14. Sensors must be capable of self-test, self-connect to the sensor network, determine GPS location, and be emplaced within 2 minutes

15. Sensors must be simple to use, with no need for external equipment to set up sensors in the field, with one-button sensor operation

16. Sensors must be able to locate their global position automatically or be placed on the map in the system manually, at the operator’s discretion

17. Sensors must have displacement / tamper alarms to alert the operator and track the sensor’s location if tampered with or moved

18. System must communicate up to 15 km line of sight from sensor to gateway

19. System must be Starlink capable

20. System must be Zerotier capable

21. System must be capable of integrating 3rd party equipment, like cameras or other effectors, into the

Cursor-on-Target-based sensor ecosystem

22. Sensor system must be able to collect and store a minimum of 300,000 sensor alarms in order to build pattern of life (PoL) data and provide an analytics capability for analysis of the collected PoL data

23. System must be scalable so that it can be used for small areas or very large areas – very few sensors up to hundreds linking to a single gateway / data concentrator, but also be capable of using larger numbers of sensors linked to multiple gateways in a base-wide application

24. System must use an open data message format that can be natively integrated into ATAK and common operating picture platforms

25. System must use star topology from sensors to gateway, without the use of meshing

Multi-Domain Sensing System Salient Characteristics
