About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon analysis services required by the USGS Earthquake Science Center.

The contractor shall perform radiocarbon dating analyses on approximately 45 samples of organic material (wood, charcoal, or shell) from sediment outcrops and cores to support seismic hazards research along the West Coast of the United States and Alaska. The contractor must acknowledge sample receipt via email, complete all sample preparation including physical isolation, chemical pretreatments, conversion to carbon dioxide and graphite, and radiocarbon dating using AMS technology. For shell samples, the contractor shall complete cleaning and hydrolysis prior to graphitization and measurement. The contractor must analyze isotopic values of 13C required for mass dependent fractionation correction from on-line splits of prepared samples and provide radiocarbon dates within 60 days of receipt with typical accuracies better than +/- 30 radiocarbon years with δ13C corrections. Deliverables consist of 14C analyses completed within 60 days of receiving each batch of samples and a written report listing 14C analysis results and ages with descriptions of any special preparation procedures used, delivered within 60 days in MS Word, MS Excel, or PDF format to the technical liaison by email. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026 to September 30, 2028, with all work performed at the contractor's facility. No government-furnished property is required.

STATEMENT OF WORK

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The USGS Earthquake Science Center (ESC) requires accelerator mass spectrometer radiocarbon analyses on very small samples (including samples that are less than 1 mg in size) of organic material from outcrops and cores of sediment to assess when earthquakes (1) caused surface displacement or (2) generated shaking that disturbed lake sediment.

Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) technology must be utilized in performing the radiocarbon analysis as it allows the flexibility to analyze very small samples that could be as small as 100 ug.

2.0 BACKGROUND

The USGS Earthquake Science Center (ESC) is investigating evidence for earthquake-related surface deformation and shaking in lakes along the West Coast of the United States and Alaska to produce seismic hazard maps for the nation and must estimate the times when geologic evidence of seismic shaking or surface deformation formed. This field-based research is one component of the Southern California Earthquake Hazards Project, which falls within the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program.

3.0 SCOPE

The contractor shall perform the tasks listed under Section 4.0 below to obtain radiocarbon estimates on the provided samples to support seismic hazards research in the Western United States.

4.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

USGS will provide approximately 45 samples of organic material such as wood, charcoal, or shell.

The contractor shall acknowledge receipt of samples to the technical liaison by email prior to proceeding with analysis. Contractor will complete sample preparation, including physical isolation, chemical pretreatments and preparations, conversion of sample material to carbon dioxide and graphite, and completion of the radiocarbon date through accelerator mass spectrometry. If shells provided, the contractor will complete cleaning and hydrolysis prior to graphitization and measurement. The contractor will analyze material for isotopic values of 13C, required for mass dependent fractionation correction will be measured from on-line splits from the prepared samples. Contractor will provide radiocarbon dates within 60 days of receipt with typical accuracies better than +/- 30 radiocarbon years with d13C corrections.

5.0 DELIVERABLES

Contractor will complete 14C analyses within 60 days of receiving each batch of samples.

Contractor will provide a written report that lists the results of 14C analyses and ages and will include descriptions of any special preparation procedures used in performing the analyses, Contractor will provide report within 60 days.

Acceptable formats for deliverables include MS Word, MS Excel, and PDF, and shall be delivered to the technical liaison by email.
