4. Background: The USAMRDC is the Army's medical materiel developer, with responsibility for medical research, development, and acquisition. The USAMRDC's expertise in these critical areas helps establish and maintain the capabilities the Army needs to fight and win on the battlefield. The USAMRDC is comprised of eight (8) Subordinate Commands located throughout the world. Six (6) medical research laboratory commands execute the science and technology program to investigate medical solutions for the battlefield with a focus on various areas of biomedical research, including military infectious diseases, combat casualty care, military operational medicine, medical chemical and biological defense, and clinical and rehabilitative medicine. The Command manages a large extramural research program with numerous contracts, grants, and cooperative research and development agreements to provide additional science and technology capabilities from leading academic, private industry, and other Government organizations. Two (2) additional commands focus on medical materiel advanced development and medical research and development contracting. The Command is staffed with highly qualified scientists, program managers, acquisition experts, and support personnel. The critical expertise in these areas ensures USAMRDC has the medical capabilities the Army needs to fight and win on the battlefield. From illness to injury, USAMRDC is the only organization solely focused on research and development to address the military’s unique medical readiness requirements.
The Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) is a mission essential symposium, sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs and managed by the USAMRDC, in conjunction with the other Military Services. It is a premier scientific conference designed to address the unique medical needs of the Warfighter and provides a collaborative environment for military medical care providers with deployment experience, Department of Defense (DoD) scientists, academia, and industry in the primary areas of Combat Casualty Care, Military Operational Medicine, Clinical and Rehabilitative Medicine, Medical Simulation, and Military Infectious Diseases Research Programs. The MHSRS provides an opportunity for the Services to share advancements and identify critical research needs essential to the mission. This collaborative environment for DoD scientists, academia, and industry, precludes duplicative efforts, and fosters rapid advancement and evaluation of research and development activities through a constant exchange of medical research information.
