About this file

This document is a Request for Information (RFI) issued by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) for the SLOW MPS SR PRODUCTION project. The project has an estimated value of $600,000 to $700,000 and a potential Request for Proposal (RFP) and award are estimated for November 2024.

The RFI seeks information from companies that can provide the goods and services described in the attached Statement of Work (SOW). The SOW outlines the technical requirements, deliverables, and schedule for the production of five PLC chassis designs based on Allen-Bradley components. The RFI requests responses by July 29, 2024, including budgetary quotes and information about the company's capabilities, management and operations, technical abilities, and past experience. LBNL is interested in understanding if respondents can meet the requirements and deliver the systems on schedule using a quality-controlled manufacturing process. The RFI states that no reimbursement will be made for costs associated with providing the requested information.

OVERVIEW & BACKGROUND

ALS-U is an upgrade project to the LBNL Advanced Light Source (ALS). The ALS is a 1.9 GeV storage ring operating at 500 mA of beam current. It is optimized to produce intense beams of soft x-rays, which offer spectroscopic contrast, nanometer-scale resolution, and broad temporal sensitivity. The ALS facility includes an accelerator complex and photon delivery system capable of providing the foundations for an upgrade to achieve world-leading soft x-ray coherent flux. The existing ALS provides a ready-made foundation, including conventional facilities, and also includes extensive beamlines (up to 40 simultaneously operating beamlines) and instrumentation, an experimental hall, computing resources, ancillary laboratories, offices, and related infrastructure to be heavily utilized in an upgrade scenario.

The five PLC chassis designs LBNL is looking to acquire (Model A through Model E), are based on Allen-Bradley 5380 series CPU and 5000 series I/O modules. All chassis are of a modular three-piece design and each sub-assembly can be assembled independently. The front panel contains all PLC components, and the rear panel includes interface connectors. When assembled together, these three sub-assemblies make up one PLC chassis.
