Request for Information (RFI)/Sources Sought

Acquisition of EIC Superconducting Wire for Rutherford Cable

To all Potential/Interested Suppliers, Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC (herein known as “BSA”), operator of Brookhaven National

Laboratory (BNL) under a Prime Contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking expressions of interest from firms regarding the supply of niobium titanium (NbTi)

Superconducting Wire for Rutherford Cable as outlined in Attachment (A), “Statement of Work

Acquisition of EIC Superconducting Wire for Rutherford Cable Revision A 1/3/23”.

Please note that this is a RFI/Sources Sought notice, not a Request For Proposal, and no solicitation exists at this time.

This RFI is for informational and planning purposes only and is not to be construed as a commitment by the U.S. Government, nor will the U.S. Government pay for information received.

The information from this notice will help the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Basic

Energy Sciences (BES) survey available resources.

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is a new Nuclear Physics Facility that will use collisions between polarized Ions and polarized electrons to study the inner structure of the Nucleon.

Superconducting wire is required for production of cable used in a prototype EIC magnet.

EIC’s design and fabrication schedule requires that suitable material be supplied Eight

Months ARO. Required quantities for each of 2 filament sizes are in the range of 30-60KM.

Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC (herein known as “BSA”), operator of Brookhaven National

Laboratory (BNL) under a Prime Contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), herewith solicits your interest for, as outlined in Attachment (A) ”Statement of Work Acquisition of EIC

Superconducting Wire for Rutherford Cable Revision A 1/3/23”.

Please provide the following information:

1. Company capabilities and experience producing and supplying wire similar to that in

Attachment (A), particularly wire of the filament sizes noted.

2. Company manufacturing and testing capabilities and available resources to meet the proposed schedule and requirements as set forth in this document and Attachment (A).

3. Contact names and references of all similar procurements that you have fulfilled in the past

We are open to all information you can and care to provide at this point. Please provide responses to BSA no later than January 18, 2023. BSA prefers electronic submissions of submittals.

• Email submissions should express your interest and describe your capabilities related to delivering this product. Emails shall be sent to Kevin Kirkendall, kkirkenda@bnl.gov with the BSA RFI 424733 in the Subject Line.
