1.1. Background: The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) maintains the stability and public confidence in the nation’s financial system by (1) insuring deposits, (2) examining and supervising financial institutions, and (3) managing resolutions and receiverships. The FDIC preserves and promotes public confidence in the U.S. financial system by insuring deposits in banks and thrift institutions for at least $250,000; by identifying, monitoring, addressing risks to the deposit insurance fund and by limiting the effect on the economy and the financial system when a bank or thrift institution fails.

As part of the job requirement, FIS are expected to understand financial accounting concepts and relationships, including the procedures used to record transactions and prepare financial statements. FIS are required to complete a Fundamentals of Accounting knowledge check within their first 60 days of employment.
