About this file
This Request for Information (RFI) seeks expressions of interest in providing electronics cabinets and rack-mounted solutions for the Electron Ion Collider project at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The laboratory requires approximately 900 cabinets over five years, with varying configurations for cooling methodology including heat exchanger cooled, fan cooled ambient air, and directed ducted forced air supply. Cabinets must maintain an internal temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit, support lifting of 400 kilograms or more, and have dimensions between 24 to 31.5 inches wide and 36 to 48 inches deep. Respondents are asked to describe their capabilities and experience in producing such cabinets, minimum order quantities, lead times, ability to provide computational fluid dynamics analysis, and whether manufacturing capabilities are located in the United States. Budgetary pricing should be provided based on quantity options listed in the document. Electronic responses are due to Cindy Blanchard by the contact information provided by the deadline not specified in this RFI.

Attachment A Specifications for Electronics Cabinets and Racks
Dated: March 18, 2024
1. Overview
1.1 Current Estimated Qty of Approximately 900 Cabinets.
1.2 Procured over an estimated 5-year period, 2026-2031.
1.3 BSA could potentially award one or multiple awardees at time of competitive solicitation.
1.4 BNL is currently evaluating 3 different cooling methodologies for the varying applications required to support the EIC project.
1.4.1 Heat Exchanger (HX) Cooled. This is a sealed rack with a water-to-air heat exchanger inside it which circulates air in a closed loop. The general design is that the HX blows cool air to front plenum created by the front door, sides, and chassis front panels. Air flows from the front through chassis (or between chassis) to the heat exchanger return.
1.4.2 Fan cooled ambient air. This is a rack with no heat exchanger, where fans direct cool, filtered ambient air from outside into the cabinet, and/or hot air from inside the rack to the outside.
1.4.3 Directed/Ducted forced air supply. This is a rack with no heat exchanger, where a source of cooled air is forced directly into the cabinet from ducting entering the lower side of the cabinet.
1.5 It is expected at time of final design, that racks will have varying overall dimensions for rack, doors, and rack base. Racks will also have the differing penetration requirements, depending on the cooling method, and cable access needs, these penetrations will either have blank panels, fans, filters, or other modifications to allow for cable access, AC delivery, or water fittings.
1.6 Where appropriate in your responses, please include assumptions for rack inputs (chilled water temperature, ambient air temperature, ducted/forced air temperature and flow rate, etc.)
1.7 BNL recognizes these unknowns will influence final pricing but is under the assumption that a sufficient budgetary quote can still be estimated by the supply base.
2. Standards
2.1 The standards listed below shall be used for the design of the specified equipment.
2.1.1 NFPA 70 National Electric Code (Latest Edition)
2.1.2 UL 1995 Heating and Cooling Equipment
