About this file

This document is a Request for Application (RFA) for the Viral INfections in the Young Lung (VINYL) Clinical Consortium, issued by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health. The program aims to create a consortium to conduct deep phenotyping of 1,500 children aged 0-2 years with viral lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI), specifically focusing on hospitalized cases of bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS). The research will involve longitudinal follow-up to assess lung disease development, particularly asthma, at ages 4-5.

The grant opportunity falls under the Lung Diseases Research Federal Grant Program (CFDA 93.838) and will be funded through a cooperative agreement using U24 activity codes. The consortium will consist of a Data and Analytics Coordinating Center (DACC), a Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC) with a Biorepository, and four Clinical Centers. While applications are not currently being solicited, potential investigators are encouraged to develop collaborations and prepare for future submission. The research addresses critical knowledge gaps in understanding viral respiratory infections in young children, including the immature host respiratory immune response, virus-specific variations, and potential long-term pulmonary impacts.
