About this file
This document outlines specifications for a hazardous fuels reduction contract on the Gunflint Ranger District of the Superior National Forest in Minnesota. Key details include:
-
The contract involves mechanical understory fuels reduction on 152 acres across two units, Rescue and Squint, to reduce hazardous live and dead balsam fir, conifer, and other trees. Work will include cutting, piling, and crushing woody materials.
-
Pile construction specifications mandate minimum sizes of 12 feet in diameter and 10 feet in height, with smaller piles of 20 feet or less within 100 feet of roads and trails. Piles must be spaced at least 20 feet apart and located no closer than 50 feet to roads/trails or private property boundaries.
-
The contractor must have equipment such as feller bunchers, processors, harvesters or excavators capable of cutting trees at the stump. Piling must be done mechanically rather than by pushing. Non-target species may need felling to access balsam fir.
-
Work can only occur during frozen or dry non-frozen conditions as determined by the Contracting Officer's Representative. Equipment must avoid operating in conditions that could cause excessive damage or in lowlands with risk of soil damage.
