About this file
This document is a Requirements/Specifications document for a Sample Holder for Thermo Fisher (S)TEM, issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The primary requirement is for a heating/biasing (S)TEM sample holder to conduct in operando studies of electrical and optical devices, with detailed technical specifications for the primary item and optional software.
Key specifications for the sample holder include: temperature range from ambient to 900°C, temperature accuracy of 95%, image stability of 1 nm/min, bias voltage range of 0-40V, current range of 2 pA to 100 mA, α-tilt range of ± 30°, β-tilt range of ± 15°, and compatibility with Thermo Fisher Spectra and Talos S/TEM instruments. Optional software requirements include off-line image analysis, sample drift correction, synchronous parameter recording, and temperature ramp rate recommendations. The procurement includes vendor on-site installation, training for three personnel, a one-year warranty, and planned government acceptance testing over 7 business days. Delivery of goods, installation, and training is expected to be completed within 2 months after receipt of order.

TITLE: Sample Holder for Thermo Fisher (S)TEM Requesting Lab/Division/Group: PML/Applied Physics Division/ Quantitative Nanostructure Characterization Group
General Statement of Need The heating/biasing (S)TEM sample holder is needed for in operando studies of a wide variety of electrical and optical devices.
Items and/or Ancillary Services
Item 1: Heating-Biasing Holder for Thermo Fisher (S)TEM Quantity: one Specifications: 1.Temperature range of operation: ambient to 900 °C (higher is better). 2.Temperature accuracy: 95 % (higher is better). 3.Image stability at 900 °C: 1 nm/min (lower is better). 4.Controllable heating and cooling rates: up to 100 °C/ms. 5.In-situ temperature measurement or individually calibrated MEMS heating device. 6.Bias voltage range: 0 to 40 V (higher is better). 7.Current range: 2 pA to 100 mA. 8.Simultaneous application of temperature and field: up to 40 V at 900 °C. 9.Electrodes to perform 4-point probe electrical measurements simultaneously with sample heating. 10.Software for temporally recording electrical and temperature control and measurement. 11.α-tilt range: ± 30 ° (higher is better). 12.β-tilt range: ± 15 ° (higher is better). 13.Friction-free tilting in both alpha and beta directions to prevent electrical contacts on the chip from scraping against the probes. 14.EDS Compatible: 70 % line of sight at 0 ° tilt. 15.MEMS chips specimen holders must be compatible with FIB sample and contact preparation. 16.MEMs chips specimen holders must have minimal electrical leakage (lower is better). 17.MEMS chips specimen holders available with sample support films that are stable at the maximum specified temperature: holey carbon, silicon nitride, and through-hole (no film).
18.Compatibility with Thermo Fisher Spectra and Talos S/TEM instruments and software. 19.Compliance with the TEM manufacturer’s certification for X-ray safety, mechanical tolerance and vacuum safety.
20.Scientific viability of the holder demonstrated through record of publications based on using the tool.
21.A dedicated service team for fast, reliable contact. 22.Instant access to searchable PDF manuals, troubleshooting guides, application notes, real time tracking and updates on all service requests, and online ordering of MEMS devices.
Separately Priced Options and Services:
Item 2: 1. Software that allows off-line analysis of images and their metadata (so processing does not have to be done on the TEM). 2.Software that actively corrects sample drift by analyzing the live data and utilizing either/both physical means (stage and beam) and digital means for the correction.
3.Software that synchronously records in-situ heating and electrical parameters and TEM parameters (such as spot size, dwell time, exposure time, etc.) directly into the metadata of each image. 4.Software that will recommend the optimal temperature ramp rate to achieve maximum resolution for a desired field of view.
