About this file

This document is a detailed Requirements/Specifications document for a Sample Holder for Thermo Fisher (S)TEM from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The primary item requested is a heating/biasing holder for in operando studies of electrical and optical devices, with extensive technical specifications including:

Key technical requirements include: variable temperature range from ambient to ≥900°C, temperature accuracy of ≥95%, image stability of ≤1 nm/min at 900°C, controllable heating/cooling rates up to 100°C/ms, bias voltage range of 0-40V, current range of 2 pA to 100 mA, and simultaneous temperature and field application. The solicitation also includes a separately priced software option with features like offline image analysis, sample drift correction, and synchronous parameter recording. Additional requirements cover installation by vendor technician, on-site training for three personnel in operations/maintenance/troubleshooting, one-year warranty, and planned government acceptance testing over 7 business days. The document specifies compatibility with Thermo Fisher Spectra and Talos S/TEM instruments and compliance with the manufacturer's safety certifications.

TITLE: Sample Holder for Thermo Fisher (S)TEM Requesting Lab/Division/Group: PML/Applied Physics Division/ Quantitative Nanostructure Characterization Group

General Statement of Need The heating/biasing (S)TEM sample holder is needed for in operando studies of a wide variety of electrical and optical devices.

Items and/or Ancillary Services

Item 1: Heating-Biasing Holder for Thermo Fisher (S)TEM Quantity: one Specifications: 1.The holder shall have a variable temperature range of operation from ambient to ≥900 °C (higher is better).2.The holder shall have a temperature accuracy of ≥95 % (higher is better).3.Image stability with a holder temperature of 900 °C shall be ≤1 nm/min (lower is better). 4.The holder shall have controllable heating and cooling rates up to 100 °C/ms.5.The temperature on the holder shall be determined either by in-situ temperature measurement or from calibration of the individual heating device on each microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) chip.6.The holder shall have a continuously controllable bias voltage range of 0 V to ≥40 V (higher is better).7.The holder shall have ripple and noise ≤10 mV.8.The holder shall have a current range of 2 pA to 100 mA.9.The holder shall be capable of simultaneous application of temperature and field up to 40 V at 900 °C.10.The holder shall include electrodes to perform 4-point probe electrical measurements simultaneously with sample heating.11.The system shall include software for temporally recording electrical and temperature control and measurement. 12.The holder shall have an α-tilt range of at least ± 30 ° (higher is better).13.The holder shall have a β-tilt range of at least ± 15 ° (higher is better).14.The holder shall have friction-free tilting in both alpha and beta directions to prevent electrical contacts on the chip from scraping against the probes and to preserve heating and electrical integrity.15.The holder (including the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) chips) shall not block more than 30 % line of sight to the energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) when the holder is at 0 ° tilt.16.The holder (including the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) chips) must be compatible with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).17.Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) chips specimen holders must be compatible with focused ion beam (FIB) sample and contact preparation. 18.MEMs chips specimen holders must have minimal electrical leakage (lower is better).19.MEMS chips specimen holders must be available with sample support films that are stable at the maximum specified temperature: holey carbon, silicon nitride, and through-hole (no film).20.The contractor shall demonstrate scientific viability of the holder through a record of publications based on using the tool.21.The contractor shall have a dedicated service team. The contractor shall respond to requests for service by phone or email within 48 hours of initial contact.

22.The contractor shall provide searchable electronic copies of manuals, troubleshooting guides, and application notes, as well as real time tracking and updates on all service requests, and online ordering of MEMS devices.23.The system shall include all hardware necessary to operate the biasing holder, including any necessary power supply(ies), electronics, and cabling.24. Compatibility with Thermo Fisher Spectra and Talos S/TEM instruments and software.25.Compliance with the TEM manufacturer’s certification for X-ray safety, mechanical tolerance and vacuum safety.

Requirements / Specifications: Sample Holder for Thermo Fisher (S)TEM 2

Separately Priced Options and Services:

Item 2: 1. Software that allows off-line analysis of images and their metadata (so processing does not have to be done on the TEM). 2.Software that actively corrects sample drift by analyzing the live data and utilizing either/both physical means (stage and beam) and digital means for the correction.

3.Software that synchronously records in-situ heating and electrical parameters and TEM parameters (such as spot size, dwell time, exposure time, etc.) directly into the metadata of each image. 4.Software that will recommend the optimal temperature ramp rate to achieve maximum resolution for a desired field of view.
