0001 Anthropometry Training

Anthropometric training for up to 10 NIOSH personnel in FY2026. The course is to be held over 2 days and involve a mix of lecture materials and hands-on training in facial landmarking.

Statement of Work / Performance Work Statement

Title: Essentials of Anthropometry: Hands-On Training in Head and Face Measurements

Period of performance of this contract is: Within 6 months after contract is awarded.

SECTION 1 – BACKGROUND

A well-fitting respirator is heavily dependent on the facial dimensions of the user for the respirator to make a proper seal to the face. Zhuang & Bradtmiller (2005) conducted an anthropometric survey of the U.S. worker population in 2003 and developed a database reflective of the face distributions of respirator users. This data was then utilized to develop a new respirator fit test panel encompassing five different head sizes representative of approximately 95% of the population, highlighting how respirator selection and fit and dependent on the unique head and face sizes of the user (Zhuang et al. 2007). To maintain the necessary skillsets and expertise needed to determine a person’s head size based on their unique facial dimensions and then correlate these findings to better understand respirator fit, Anthrotech is to provide anthropometric training for up to ten NIOSH personnel in Fiscal Year 2026. This course is to be held over two days and involve a mix of lecture material and hands-on training in facial landmarking and measurement extraction from a list of measurements. This contract is necessary and would align with the HHS Contract Efficiency Initiative by providing training specifically designed to equip NIOSH personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge in anthropometry, which is relevant and can be applied directly to their core work on human subject facial measurement initiatives related to respirator fit. This contract would also build NIOSH's internal capacity by enabling personnel to develop and provide anthropometry expertise within the Respirator Approval Program. In addition, by training up to ten trainees at the NIOSH Pittsburgh location, the contract would minimize travel and accommodation costs associated with sending personnel to external training locations, which could lead to significant savings and better resource allocation.

SECTION 2 – PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this work is to provide key NIOSH personnel the critical anthropometry knowledge and training that can be applied to core human subject and respirator fit initiatives performed regularly within the program. NIOSH personnel would benefit from obtaining the proposed facial anthropometry training for several reasons related to human subject and respirator fit initiatives:

• Understanding Facial Dimensions: Facial anthropometry involves measuring the dimensions and contours of the human face. This knowledge is crucial for NIOSH personnel to understand how varying designs of respirators would fit a diverse range of facial shapes and sizes.

• Improving Respirator Fit: Proper fit is essential for respirators to function effectively. Training in facial anthropometry would help NIOSH personnel understand how different facial features affect the fit of respirators, allowing them to assess and improve fit testing methodologies.

• Enhancing Safety and Compliance: By ensuring that respirators fit properly and understanding how respirator fit is correlated with a person’s facial dimensions based off of the foundations presented within this training, NIOSH personnel could better inform ways on how to reduce exposure risks to hazardous substances. This is particularly important in occupational settings where respiratory protection is required and critical for worker safety, such as in healthcare, mining, wildfire safety, and more.

• Conducting Effective Fit Testing: Training in facial anthropometry would equip NIOSH personnel with the skills necessary to conduct fit tests accurately, ensuring that the respirators selected for use are appropriate for the individuals wearing them based on their unique facial dimensions.

This training will be conducted at the NIOSH Pittsburgh, PA location

503 Xenia Avenue Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387
