About this file
This is a REAL ID compliance advisory issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) applicable to federal agencies and contractors requiring access to federal facilities. The document provides guidance on identification requirements effective May 7, 2025, for individuals seeking access to federal facilities, including Massachusetts National Guard installations such as Barnes ANG Base. The advisory specifies that only state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards bearing the REAL ID compliant star marking will be accepted for official purposes, which include accessing federal facilities, boarding commercial aircraft, and entering nuclear power plants. Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDLs) issued by Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont are recognized as acceptable alternatives, even without the star marking. The document references the REAL ID Act of 2005 (H.R. 418) and directs individuals to the DHS REAL ID website for comprehensive information and examples of compliant identification documents.
Contractors and personnel working on the Airfield Pavement Markings project at Barnes ANG Base in Massachusetts must comply with REAL ID requirements beginning May 7, 2025. Any individual 18 years or older requiring access to the facility must present either a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, identification card with the appropriate star marking, or an acceptable EDL. Failure to provide compliant identification will result in denial of access to the Massachusetts National Guard facility. These requirements establish a minimum security standard for facility access and are enforced uniformly across all federal installations.

ATTENTION CONTRACTORS:
Effective 7 May, 2025: Federal agencies, including DHS and TSA, may only accept state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards as identification for purposes of accessing federal facilities - including TSA airport security checkpoints - if the license or card was issued by a REAL ID compliant state in accordance with the REAL ID security standards (meaning the license or card must include the REAL ID compliant star marking).
REAL ID-compliant cards will have of one of the following markings on the upper top portion of the card. If the card does not have one of these markings, it is not REAL ID-compliant and won’t be accepted as proof of identity in order to board commercial aircraft.
Examples of Real ID’s are included at the conclusion of this document
Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDL) issued by Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont are considered acceptable alternatives to REAL ID-compliant cards and will also be accepted for official REAL ID purposes. Most EDLs do not contain the star marking and this is acceptable.
Any individual seeking access to a MA National Guard facility without a Real ID will be denied access.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, H.R. 418 - Real ID Act of 2005 enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses and identification cards.” The Act and implementing regulations establish minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibit federal agencies from accepting for certain official purposes noncompliant driver’s licenses and identification cards.
The official purposes covered by the Act and regulation are:
• Accessing certain federal facilities;
• Boarding Federally regulated commercial aircraft; and https://www.dhs.gov/real-id/real-id-faqs https://www.congress.gov/bill/109th-congress/house-bill/418
• Entering nuclear power plants.
Secure driver's licenses and identification documents are a vital component of our national security framework. DHS/TSA is committed to enforcing the REAL ID Act, therefore, beginning May 7, 2025, anyone 18 years and older that plans to fly domestically or visit certain Federal facilities will need a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification.
The Act’s prohibitions do not affect other uses of driver’s licenses or identification cards unrelated to official purposes as defined in the Act.
