SECTION 53 10 00
GEOLOGIC INVESTIGATIONS
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 GENERAL GEOLOGY
A. General:
1. The geologic descriptions, drawings, logs of subsurface explorations, water level data, and test data in these specifications include information and records of geologic investigations for the work, and are the geologic data upon which the design of this work is based. These data supersede any previous versions which may be available for examination by Offerors. These data are contained in Section 53 20 00 - Records of Geologic and Subsurface Investigations.
2. Selected samples recovered during investigations were tested by Mid-Pacific Construction Office (MPCO) Materials Testing Laboratories in Willows, California. Summaries of Physical Properties Test Results from laboratory tests performed on these samples are contained in Section 53 20 00 - Records of Geologic and Subsurface Investigations. Offerors are encouraged to inspect the site and to obtain their own samples and perform tests on the materials to evaluate properties which the Offeror believes to be significant. Samples are not available for examination. Offerors wishing to visit the site, or take samples at the site should make arrangements with Brian Dela Barre or Locke Hahne at Bureau of Reclamation, Lahontan Basin Area Office, 705 North Plaza Street, Room 320, Carson City, NV, 89701-4015, telephone 1-775-884-8351 / 775-884-8348.
3. Copies of the following referenced reports and memoranda which contain information on the area, site geology, and materials properties may be examined at Bureau of Reclamation, Mid-Pacific Regional Office, 2800 Cottage Way, Sacramento, CA, 95825. Offerors wishing to inspect the reports and memoranda should make arrangements with Joel Sturm or Greg Mongano at 1-916-978-5305 /916-978-5331. 4. The geologic logs of test pits, drill holes, water-level data, and other available geologic information indicate the conditions encountered during the investigations. The water-level data show the conditions at the particular time or times the information was obtained and may not indicate variations such as those caused by drought, precipitation, changes in the surface elevation of nearby reservoirs, or flooding.
5. The geologic drawings portray generalized geologic conditions. The geologic logs of explorations should be consulted for specific details. Engineering geology and geotechnical considerations are discussed in Articles 1.05, 1.06, and 1.07.
For a discussion of water occurrence, see Section 31 03 33 - Removal of Water.
6. General geologic unit definitions, explanations of geologic symbols, and geologic notes are shown on the drawings specific to the location of the feature shown.
7. Surface geology and location of explorations, cross sections, and note drawings for the work are included in these specifications on drawings 320-D-268 through 320-D-279.
53 10 00 - 3
a. Surficial materials recorded in all geologic exploration logs included in these Specifications were classified under current Unified Soil Classification System procedures as described in USBR 5000 (laboratory classification) and USBR 5005 (visual classification). These two procedures are similar to ASTM D 2487 and ASTM D 2488, respectively.
Surficial materials recorded on geologic exploration logs prepared before January 1, 1986, were described using the terminology on Reclamation standard drawing 103- D-347. Copies of the above Reclamation procedures are available for review at the Bureau of Reclamation, Mid- Pacific Regional Office, 2800 Cottage Way, Sacramento, CA, 95825.

1.03 GEOLOGIC INVESTIGATIONS
A. Geologic investigations conducted at Stampede Dam and Reservoir are listed below; and available logs of investigations are contained in Section 53 20 00 - Records of Geologic and Subsurface Investigations.
B. Post Construction Investigations:
1. Investigations for borrow materials were conducted in the waste materials downstream of Stampede Dam (Primary Borrow Area) in 2005 [1]. The investigations consisted of 12 drill holes, 7 test pits and 3 dozer test trenches. In-place densities were performed in the test pits and test trenches. See drawings 320-D-275, -276, -277, and -278 for locations of the explorations and geologic sections of the primary borrow area. The logs of the test pits are in Section 53 20 00 – Records of Geologic and Subsurface Investigations of these specifications.

2. Investigations for construction of a dam raise were completed in October 2009.
These investigations consisted of 4 test pits excavated into the zone 1 materials on the dam crest. In-place sand cone density tests were performed in the zone 1 embankment materials [5]. See drawing 320-D-268 for locations of the test pits.
3. Investigations for the saddle dikes were completed in October 2010. The investigations at the saddle dikes consisted of 3 test pits at each proposed location (9 total) [6]. See drawings 320-D-269, -270, and -271 for the test pit locations.
See drawings 320-D-273 and -274 for associated geologic cross-sections. The logs of the test pits are in Section 53 20 00 - Records of Geologic and Subsurface Investigations of these specifications.
4. Ten test pits were excavated in the primary borrow area downstream of Stampede Dam in July 2010 to determine the corrosion potential of these materials [7]. A field resistivity survey was also conducted as part of these investigations.
5. Five test pits were excavated in the Stampede Dam saddle dikes borrow area located within the limits of Stampede Reservoir, midway between the east and west dike sites [6]. See drawing 320-D-268. The borrow area is periodically inundated by Stampede Reservoir. A detail of the saddle dike potential borrow area is included in drawing 320-D-272. Test pits encountered a thin layer of topsoil composed of lean clay to silt (CL-ML)sg and silty to clayey gravel (GM- GC) overlying mostly decomposed to moderately weathered tuff and tuff breccia that weather to a silty sand (SM) and sandy clay to lean clay with gravel (SC-CL)g.
1.04 REGIONAL GEOLOGY
A. Stampede Dam lies within the Sierra Nevada Physiographic Province, near its boundary with the Basin and Range province to the east. The Sierra Nevada Range is a monolithic westward tilted fault block trending for almost 400 miles from the Cascade Range to the Mojave Desert. The oldest rock group is composed of Pre-Cenozoic metasediments, metavolcanics and plutonic rocks of the Sierra Nevada Batholith. The younger group is composed of Upper Tertiary age volcanic rocks, lacustrine and glacial deposits and alluvium. Numerous unconformities are found within these deposits and all but the Quaternary age deposits are deformed in varying degrees of intensity.
1.05 SITE GEOLOGY
A. Stampede Dam and Reservoir are located within the Verdi-Boca Basin which was formed as a northwest-southeast trending structural trough formed by crustal extension, downwarping and faulting along the eastern margin of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
The basin is underlain by Neogene age volcanic rocks composed primarily of andesite and basalt flows with andesite and dacite pyroclastics and tuff deposits. Between 12- and 3-Ma the basin was filled with a generally upward fining sequence of conglomerate and sandstone, interbedded with lava flows near the base and tuff breccia and airfall tuff higher up in the section [1].
53 10 00 - 5
B. Two main types of tuff breccia (Tv) are present at the damsite that were deposited by volcanic mudflows and as ash fall ejecta: a generally poorly lithified friable type and a moderately lithified firm type. The softer, friable tuff breccia is the predominant foundation rock. Interbeds of siltstone, sandstone, fine-grained tuff and cinder beds, and volcanic rubble are found in both types of tuff breccia. The contacts between the two types of tuff breccia are sharp and gently undulating. Secondary cementing agents are not present in tuff breccia. Tuff breccia is typically massive and crudely layered stratified. Bedding within or between tuff breccia units is difficult to identify.
C. Stratigraphy:
1. Embankment (Emb):
a. Asphalt: The dam crest is paved with asphalt approximately 0.5-foot thick.
b. Zone 2 (Emb): The zone 2 materials are approximately 2.5 feet thick on the dam crest and are composed of poorly graded gravel with clay, sand, and cobbles (GP-GC)sc. Cobble sizes range from 3 to 5 inches in diameter.
c. Zone 1 (Emb): The zone 1 embankment consists of silty and clayey gravel with sand (GM)s and (GC)s, silty and clayey sand with gravel (SM)g and (SC)g).
2. Waste Materials:
a. Waste materials comprises the Primary Borrow Area located downstream from Stampede Dam and consists of a mixture of material excavated from the dam foundation, outlet works tunnel, powerplant and other structures.
Excavated materials consists of silty gravel with sand (GM)s, poorly graded gravel with clay and sand (GP-GC)s, silty sand with gravel and cobbles (SM)gc, and clayey sand with gravel (SC)g. Trace amounts of boulders are also present in the waste materials. The gravel, cobbles and boulders are composed of hard, subrounded to subangular basalt and andesite. Some of the boulders are up to 5 feet in diameter.
b. Discarded, non-hazardous construction debris and rubbish consisting of tires, metal debris such as fence posts, pipe and rebar, concrete blocks, plastic, and wood fragments should be expected in residual amounts within the Primary Borrow Area and shall be removed and disposed of in accordance with Section 01 74 00 – Cleaning and Waste Management.
3. Quaternary Age:
a. Topsoil: The topsoil was encountered in the saddle dikes area and is derived from in-place weathering of bedrock. The topsoil is approximately 1-foot thick at the two saddle dike sites and in the saddle dikes borrow area.
53 10 00 - 6
b. Slopewash (Qsw): Composed of gray to tan, hard, poorly graded, subangular to rounded sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders with low plasticity fines. The boulders range up to 24 inches in diameter.
c. Alluvium (Qal): The alluvium is approximately 8 to 10 feet thick in the river channel and is composed of poorly stratified, tan, hard, subangular to rounded sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders with low plasticity fines. The alluvium is divided into channel deposits (Qal1) and floodplain deposits (Qal2). The Qal1 underlies the Qal2.
1) The Qal1 materials were classified as Clayey Sand with Gravel (SC)g, Poorly Graded Gravel with Silt, Sand and Cobbles (GP- GM)sc, Poorly Graded Sand with Silt, Gravel and Cobbles (SP- SM)gc, Clayey Sand with Gravel and Cobbles (SC)gc, and Sandy Lean Clay with Gravel, Cobbles and Boulders s(CL)gcb. The boulders are generally composed of hard basalt and andesite and the maximum size encountered is 5 feet in diameter.
2) The Qal2 deposits form the upper unit of discontinuous floodplain deposits that are predominantly composed of sand and silt materials with lesser amounts of gravel. These materials are classified as Silty Sand (SM), Silty Sand with Gravel and Cobbles (SM)gc, Lean Clay with Sand, Gravel and Cobbles (CL)sgc, Clayey Sand with Gravel and Cobbles (SC)gc, and Gravelly Lean Clay with Sand g(CL)s.
d. Terrace Deposits (Qt): Terrace Deposits are abandoned river channel deposits located downstream of the right abutment. Terrace Deposits are composed of silt, sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders with occasional, thin (less than 1-foot thick), discontinuous sand lenses and boulders to approximately 5 feet in diameter.
e. Lacustrine deposits (Ql): Lacustrine Deposits are fine grained materials derived from alluvial deposition in lake beds or ponds. Lacustrine deposits classify as clayey sand (SC) and lean clay with sand (CL)s.
These materials are hard and difficult to excavate with hand tools.
4. Tertiary Age:
a. Volcanic Rocks (Tv): Tuff and Tuff Breccia composed of angular, hard, green, black, gray, and blue igneous and metamorphic clasts ranging up to 20 feet, but mostly less than 0.2-foot in diameter, embedded in a volcanic ash matrix. The matrix is fine to coarse grained, friable to firm, decomposed to moderately weathered, moderately soft to moderately hard, indistinctly to thinly bedded, and gray to white. The volcanics are weathered at the surface. Soil-like decomposed tuff breccia is pale yellowish-brown sandy clay with gravel (SC)g, silty sand (SM), and silty sand with gravel (SM)g. Decomposed tuff occurs as silt (ML), elastic silt (MH) and gravelly elastic silt with sand g(MH)s.

1) Jointing is not widespread or common. When present, two widely spaced, orthogonal, high angle sets are oriented approximately normal crudely defined, low-angle layering.
1.06 WATER OCCURRENCE
A. Groundwater was not encountered in the test pits on the dam crest, the area of the saddle dikes or in the spillway excavation area. Groundwater is not expected to be encountered during excavation of the saddle dike foundations.
B. Groundwater may be encountered at depth in the excavation of borrow materials for the Primary and Saddle Dike borrow areas. The groundwater is unconfined and perched on top of the bedrock. Groundwater inflow will vary depending upon depth of excavation and permeability/storativity of the materials. Given the amount of borrow materials available in each of the borrow areas, excavation below the static groundwater table is not anticipated or required. Borrow materials excavated near the static groundwater level that are oversaturated will need to be spread and dried, prior to transport.
1.07 ENGINEERING GEOLOGY AND GEOTECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
A. Dam Crest Excavation:
1. Excavation into the dam crest materials, not including the asphalt road, will be with common methods. Exploratory test pits were excavated with a CAT 314C LCR Excavator using a 4-foot wide smooth jaw bucket. A trench box was used to ensure safe working conditions for the personnel performing the in-place densities.
B. Saddle Dikes Excavation:
1. Excavation of the surficial materials and bedrock for the saddle dikes will be with common methods. A CAT 330C excavator with a 42-inch bucket was utilized to excavate the test pits at the saddle dikes.
C. Spillway Excavation:
1. Excavation of the surficial materials overlying bedrock for the spillway excavation area will be with common methods.
D. Borrow Areas:
1. Two borrow areas have been designated as sources of Zone 2A backfill for the MSE crest structure or as compacted embankment for the saddle dikes: 1) the Stampede Reservoir Primary Borrow Area; and 2) the Stampede Dam Saddle Dikes Borrow Area. The primary borrow area is located near the downstream toe of the dam. See drawings 320-D-275, -276, -277, and -278 for locations of the explorations and geologic sections of the primary borrow area. The Stampede Dam Saddle Dikes Borrow Area is located midway between the east and west
53 10 00 - 8 saddle dikes and is shown on drawings 320-D-268 and -271. Much of the main saddle dike borrow area is located within the limits of Stampede Reservoir, however, material in an amount sufficient for constructing the two dikes is located above the Top of Active Conservation reservoir water surface at El.
5946.1.
2. Excavation for the borrow areas can be accomplished with common methods.
The test pits in the Stampede Dam saddle dikes borrow area were excavated with a CAT 330C excavator. The test trenches in the primary borrow area were excavated with a Cat D8R dozer.
E. Slope Stability:
1. The surficial soils and weathered bedrock are susceptible to caving when wet and saturated. They will not support wheeled traffic when wet. The steepest natural slopes in the surficial materials are approximately 2:1 (H:V). Most natural slopes are much flatter.
2. Temporary excavation cutslopes not shown on the drawings that are 3 feet in vertical height or greater will maintain a 1.5:1(H:V) or flatter slope in zone 1 materials on the existing dam and dike crests should be stable. Permanent cutslopes should be stable at 2:1(H:V) or flatter.
3. Flatter temporary cutslopes may be required if wet or saturated soils are encountered in excavations to stabilize slopes and insure safe working conditions.
Refer to Bureau of Reclamation Safety and Health Standards, October 2009, Section 22.2.1 Sloping and Benching. Control of runoff and/or removal of standing water from temporary slopes by drainage or pumping may be required.
F. Sloughing and Caving:
1. The presence of saturated soil, standing water and groundwater and will adversely affect the stability of cutslopes.
G. Strength Properties:
1. Dry unit weight of the zone 1 materials on the dam and dike crests determined by in-place sand-cone density tests ranged from 95.6 to 104.9 lbs/cu ft, with an average of 98.3 lbs/cu ft. Moisture contents ranged from 1.2 percent dry to 1.1 percent wet, with an average of 0.5 percent dry.
2. Dry unit weight determined by in-place sand-cone density tests ranged from 103.4 to 113.7 lbs/ft3 in waste materials and 109.9 to 111.2 lbs/ft3 in alluvium located in the Primary Borrow Area at the downstream toe of the dam.
H. Borrow Materials:
1. Borrow materials to be processed for Zone 2A MSE crest structure backfill are located in the Primary Borrow Area downstream of Stampede Dam as shown on Drawings 320-D-275, -276, -277, and -278. Borrow materials for the saddle
53 10 00 - 9 dikes are located in the Stampede Dam saddle dikes borrow area, midway between the east and west dike sites as shown on drawing 320-D-272. Laboratory data from investigations for borrow materials are included in Section 53 20 00 - Records of Geologic and Subsurface Investigations of these specifications. The estimated available materials quantities are approximately 170,000 cubic yards in the primary borrow area [3], and approximately 60,000 cubic yards in the Stampede Dam saddle dikes borrow area [6].
I. Water Removal:
1. Surface drainage will be required to prevent flooding of excavations during rainfall events. Water removal will be required when surface water overflows into the excavations to provide a dry working area as specified in Section 31 03 33 - Removal of Water of these specifications and in accordance with the approved SWPPP Plan and acceptable requirements of Regional and State Boards.
