CAST-IN-PLACE CONCRETE
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 GENERAL
A. The work of this Section includes, as specified and as shown on the drawings, labor, equipment, and materials required for:
1. Furnishing and installing concrete accessible parking pads with access aisles, accessible concrete curb ramps, concrete slab at tight turning radius at the south abutment, concrete walkways, curbing, a viewing area with walls, a picnic pad, and concrete slabs and stairs at the Main Visitor’s Center.
2. Concrete work must ensure accessibility as required by law for persons with disabilities in accordance with the Architectural Barriers Act of 1968 (82 Stat. 718), as amended (42 U.S.C. 4151 et seq.) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (29 U.S.C. 794). “Specific requirements are set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act/Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Guidelines: ABA Chapter 1 (Application & Administration); Chapter 2 (Scoping Requirements), commonly referred to as ABAAS, and shall be used by the Contractor to ensure compliance with the above-listed laws. The finished product must meet the requirements set forth in ABAAS. It is the sole responsibility of the Contractor to determine beforehand how to address tolerances to ensure that the finished products comply with Federal standards. Should the finished product fail to comply, it shall be the responsibility of the Contractor, at its sole CRM 03-01 expense, to make any adjustments necessary to bring the deficient components into compliance.”
1.02 PAYMENT
A. Furnishing and Placing Concrete:
1. Payment: Include in lump sum price offered in the schedule:
a Includes cementitious materials and reinforcement.
2. Over excavation: No payment will be made for concrete used to fill over excavation.
1.03 DEFINITIONS
A. Cementitious materials: Portland cement, or portland cement plus a pozzolan, or blended hydraulic cement.
03 30 00 - 18
K. Prevention of repeated failure to meet tolerances:
1. When concrete placements result in hardened concrete which does not meet specified tolerances, submit to COR an outline of preventive actions such as modifications to forms, modified procedure for setting screeds, and different finishing techniques to be implemented to avoid repeated failures. Submit when requested by COR.
2. Government reserves the right to delay concrete placements until preventive actions which have been approved by COR are implemented.
3.09 CURING
A. Water curing:
1. Keep concrete surface wet for twenty-eight (28) days, minimum, from time concrete has attained sufficient set to prevent detrimental effects to surface.
2. Cure by using water-saturated material; a system of perforated pipes, mechanical sprinklers, or porous hose; or other methods which will keep surfaces continuously (not periodically) wet. Curing methods will be subject to approval by COR.
B. Curing with curing compound:
1. Apply to concrete surface to provide a water-retaining film. Reapply as necessary to maintain a continuous, water-retaining film on surface for twenty-eight
(28) days.
2. Thoroughly mix compound and spray apply in one coat to provide a continuous, uniform film over surface.
3. Do not exceed coverage rate of 150 square feet per gallon. Decrease coverage rate on rough surfaces as necessary to obtain required continuous film.
4. Ensure ample coverage on edges, corners, and rough surfaces.
5. Spray equipment and equipment performance will be subject to approval by COR.
Repair or replace equipment when directed by COR.
6. Use personnel qualified in using specified spray technique, as determined by COR, to perform application.
C. Polyethylene film curing:
1. Thoroughly moisten concrete surface by lightly spraying with water as soon as concrete has hardened sufficiently to prevent damage.
2. Completely cover concrete surface with polyethylene film to provide an airtight, water-retaining film over entire surface.
3. Lap edges of polyethylene sheets to seal adjacent sheets.
4. Place tightly against concrete surface at extreme edge of curing area.
03 30 00 - 19
5. Secure film to withstand wind and prevent circulation of air inside curing film.
6. Keep surface covered for fourteen (14) days, minimum.
3.10 PROTECTION
A. Protect concrete from damage until final acceptance by Government.
B. Do not load concrete or remove forms and shoring until the concrete has gained sufficient strength to safely support its weight and all imposed loads.
C. Maintain concrete at a temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) or greater for seventy-two (72) hours, minimum, after placement. Vent heater and prevent concrete from drying where artificial heat is employed.
D. Protect concrete from freezing during water curing. After discontinuance of water curing, protect concrete from freezing for next seventy-two (72) hours.
E. Protect concrete from heavy foot traffic and other construction activities by covering with plywood or other suitable material. Remove and dispose of temporary covering when no longer required.
3.11 REPAIR
A. Repair concrete in accordance with USBR M-47.
B. If repair is required, submit proposed repair method and materials in accordance with USBR M-47 at www.usbr.,gov/pmts/materials_lab/concrete/specs/M-47.pdf, and USBR Guide to Concrete Repair at www.usbr.gov/pmts/materials_lab/repairs/guide.pdf.
C. Use repair or replacement method directed by COR.
D. Minor concrete repairs to formed surfaces, surface defects, and tie holes shall be completed within 24 hours of removing forms and prior to application of any curing compound. Concrete surfaces shall be kept continuously moist until repairs are completed.
3.12 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. The Government may conduct quality assurance testing in accordance with FAR 52.246- 12 "Inspection of Construction" independent of the Contractor's Quality Control testing.
