RFA-TS-21-001: Identify and Evaluate Potential Risk Factors for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Questions & Answers
Questions and Answers received from January 8, 2021 to March 1, 2021
Please note that the questions and answers below are representative of the questions submitted by applicants. The information has been edited for accuracy and clarity.
Q1. I have a Data Use Agreement (DUA) with a federal agency that is providing data for my proposed study. Is this federal agency allowed to serve as a performance site on the grant?
A1. The federal agency cannot serve as a performance site on the grant and should not be listed as a performance site on the application.
Q2. I will partner with a researcher who will co-author papers as a result of this research, if I am funded.
The researcher will not be compensated or provide anything besides comments/feedback for those papers. Does the researcher need to be included in the proposal? The researcher is based in a country not in the United States; does that matter?
A2. It is within your purview, as contact PD/PI, to determine if the researcher will be a) named on the SF- 424 Senior/Key Personnel form and b) co-author on any manuscript resulting from an award, if your application is funded. The location of the researcher does not impact this determination.
Q3. I have a colleague who will work on the project. Would it be appropriate to include the colleague in the proposal and budget for the grant application?
A3. If you wish the colleague to be compensated with funds from the award, if the application is funded, you must include that individual and the individual’s role and effort on the SF-424 Research and Related Budget table and budget narrative.
Q4. Is graduate or undergraduate student tuition an allowable cost in the award budget?
A4. Yes. Graduate or undergraduate student tuition is an allowable cost in the award budget and should be included in the SF-424 Research and Related Budget under the Other Cost Category.
Q5. May I propose a project for only 12 months?
A5. No. Successful applicants are expected to propose projects for a three year project period. Per Part I. Overview Information. Budget and Project Period: The maximum award amount will be $500,000 per award for the first 12 month budget period. This includes both direct and indirect costs. An applicant may request a project period of up to three (3) years. The maximum total project funding amount is $1,500,000 (including both direct and indirect costs) over the expected three year project period length, with a maximum of $500,000 per award per year. The project period for this award is expected to run from 9/30/2021 to 9/29/2024.
