About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file for the Benefield Anechoic Facility (BAF) Turntable Upgrade or Replace Request for Information (RFI). The Q&A provides clarifications on key technical specifications for a potential turntable replacement or upgrade, including details about the existing 80-foot diameter turntable system. Key clarifications include: the entire central core rotates, the core extends 32 feet below the turntable, there is no separate bearing support for the core's weight, and the core contains an RF isolated room that also rotates with the turntable. The document addresses specific questions about load capacity (375,000 pounds), deformation tolerances (maximum ½ inch), utility integration, electrical systems, and the potential for reusing the existing central core. The response deadline is extended to two weeks after the Q&A document's release, with responses to be submitted by 9 June 2025.

Questions and Answers
1. Can extension be granted for the response?
Yes. We are extending it to 2 weeks AFTER we answer the questions.
2. Section 3. Precision Angular Movement, “The system shall have an integrated 1-axis azimuth positioner offset from turntable center.”
a. What are the specifications (vertical load capacity, moment capacity, speed, diameter of turntable, etc.) for the azimuth positioner?
b. Does the azimuth positioner need to be flush with the turntable surface?
The 772 TS made the decision to remove the following requirement statement from the RFI. “The system shall have an integrated 1-axis azimuth positioner offset from turntable center.”
3. Section 3. Structure Maximum Load, “…without deformation or precession…”
a. “Without” implies no deformation. However, any structure will undergo deformation (could be extremely small) with the application of any amount of load.
Is there a specific tolerance that is required?
The following is an update to the RFI to add clarity :
Structure Maximum Load: The system must be capable of rotating a maximum load of 375,000 pounds with a maximum deformation or precession of ½ inch and maintain levelness and facilitate System Under Test (SUT) maximum wheel span footprint (must fit within 80-foot diameter area). Upon removal of the load, there should be no permanent deformation or precession.
4. Section 3. Current BAF Pit Footprint, “The turntable consists of a central core that’s 70 ft in diameter and extends 70 ft below the turntable’s surface.”
a. Does the entire core rotate?
Yes, the entire core rotates. The center core extends 19’ below the exiting turntable top. After reviewing the drawings, the pit only extends 32’ below the turntable.
b. Can some drawings be provided for clarity? We will need to know the weight and how the central core assembly will attach to the new turntable.
Please see attached files. The central core assemble is supported by the current turntable structure. The current weight of the core is unknown, but it is an RF shielded room.

c. If the proposal is to replace the turntable, would the expectation then be that the entire core is replaced? We prefer to re-use the central core.
The center core is an integral part of the current turntable system, if feasible the current core can be reused.
d. Is there a bearing support below the central core to support its weight?
There is no bearing support below the center core to support its weight. The cores weight is supported by the turntable wheels.
e. Is there a thru-axis path at the base of the central core to facilitate the cables and hydraulic hose?
Yes, there is a thru-axis path at the base of the central core to facilitate hydraulic hoses and conditioned air. On the outer wall of the pit there exist a cable festoon to manage the electrical power and data fiber cables.
5. Section 3. Integration with BAF Utilities Systems and Equipment
a. Is the scope for the turntable to have a “conduit” for the listed “lines” (cooling, electrical, fiber, compressed air, nitrogen, etc.)?
That can be an approach, but all utilities must rotate with the turntable. Please see answer below.
b. How are the thru-axis cabling and hoses currently handled?
The central core is hollow through which flexible hoses are fed for the hydraulics, compressed air, and nitrogen. There is a rigid tube that also feeds through the core to a rotary joint for the conditioned air. The flexible hoses and rotary joint allow all utilities to rotate with the turn table. Please see attached files.
6. Section 3. Integration with BAF Utilities Systems and Equipment. f. INSTALL NEW
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
a. What does this mean? Please describe the scope clearly.
This is an upgrade to the existing electrical power distribution system found on the turntable. A new 480 VAC @ 200 amp circuit would need to be added to the existing festoon/feed to the center of the turntable. This is a request to add a distribution panel for the 400Hz power. The 400Hz 120V power is generator by a frequency converter located in turntable core.
7. Classified Processing Area
a. This RF isolated room is listed as being “below” the turntable. Is this in the turntable “core”?
Yes, the RF isolation room is in the turntable core.
b. Does this room rotate with the turntable?
Yes, the room rotates with the turntable.
c. If the proposal is to replace the turntable, would the expectation then be to get a new RF isolated room?
Yes, reuse, recreate, or redesign the RF isolated room.
8. Does the turntable need to have grounding brushes to make electrical contact with the surrounding floor?
There are no grounding brushes. On the outer wall of the pit there exist a cable festoon to manage the electrical power through which the turntable is grounded.
