About this file

This specification document outlines equipment requirements for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Materials Laboratory's procurement of a pyrolytic cleaning oven. The CBM Bituminous Chemistry Lab requires a new pyrolytic oven capable of removing asphaltic residues from laboratory equipment. The oven must be equivalent to the PIE2 pyrolytic cleaning oven model with a minimum internal capacity of 5.2 cubic feet and operate on 30-amp single phase 240V, 60Hz electrical service. The equipment must feature a two-stage cleaning process incorporating both pyrolysis for chamber cleaning and oxidation for exhaust treatment, with automatic programmed cleaning cycles and the capability to remove asphaltic and organic residues from various labware types including glass and metal. The procurement includes installation and operator training as required deliverables.

The specification emphasizes comprehensive safety features including chamber and oxidizer high-temperature shutoffs, manual kill switches, automatic door interlocks preventing operation while doors are open, reinforced oven doors with safety kill switches, and blast door protection mechanisms. All interior and exterior construction must be stainless steel to facilitate maintenance. The specification notes that the reference to the PIE2 model is intended to describe the desired standard of quality, performance, and characteristics without restricting competition, and that "or equal" submissions will be accepted if bidders can demonstrate product equivalency. The burden of proof regarding product equality rests with the bidder, and minor design or construction differences that do not affect suitability for the intended use will not result in rejection.

Pyrolytic Oven Specs:

CBM Bituminous Chemistry Lab is in need of a new pyrolytic cleaning oven for the purposes of removing asphaltic residues from labware. This oven should meet the following basic criteria:

• Equivalent to the PIE² pyrolytic cleaning oven.

• Minimum 5.2 cubic feet internal capacity.

• 30-amp Single Phase 240 V, 60Hz.

• Two stage process to clean the oven contents (pyrolysis) as well as the exhaust (oxidation).

• Capable of complete removal of asphaltic and other organic residues from a variety of labware types (glass, metal).

• Automatic programmed cleaning cycle.

• Safety features: chamber high temp shut off, oxidizer high temp shut off, manual kill switch, automatic door interlock so that door cannot be opened while a burn cycle is running, reinforced oven door & oven door safety kill switch, blast door & blast door kill switch.

• All stainless-steel construction (interior & exterior) for ease of maintenance.

• Installation of oven must be included.

• Training in its operation must be included.

*Please Note: The use of a brand name is for the purpose of describing the standard of quality, performance, and characteristics desired and is not intended to limit or restrict competition.

"Or equal" submissions will not be rejected because of minor differences in design, construction or features that do not affect the suitability of the product for its intended use.

Burden of proof that the product is equal is on the bidder.
