About this file
This document contains tables outlining safety factor reductions for wood utility poles based on various conditions such as circumference, presence of pockets or hollow heart, and diameter of enclosed pockets.
The tables provide guidance for inspecting and determining appropriate safety factor reductions for wood utility poles based on their measured circumference and existing conditions such as external or enclosed pockets, hollow heart, or minimum shell thickness. Table 1 lists original pole circumferences and corresponding reduced circumferences using safety factors from 4 to 2. Tables 2 through 5 provide reductions to the measured circumference based on width and depth of external pockets, minimum shell thickness for hollow heart, diameter of enclosed pockets, and width and depth of external pockets respectively.
The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of Energy for wood utility pole inspection and treatment services within the Sierra Nevada region. The solicitation includes inspection of transmission and distribution lines to determine safety factors according to the tables provided in the exhibit.

ALLOWABLE REDUCED CIRCUMFERENCE SAFETY FACTORS
No single pole to have SF less than 2.65.
No H-structure to have SF less than 2.65 and no pole to have SF less than 2.
For H-structures, add the SF for each pole together and divide by 2 to obtain the structure SF.
For tension-type structures (dead ends), no pole to have SF less than 2.65.
