About this file

This performance work statement outlines preventative maintenance and software upgrade requirements for a Zeiss 520 micro-CT scanner located at the Army Research Laboratory in Aberdeen, Maryland. The Army Research Laboratory requires two preventative maintenance inspections per year to be conducted by factory-trained engineers during normal business hours, along with software upgrades, replacement parts including future X-ray sources, and emergency or additional service visits as needed. The contractor must also provide maintenance reports after each visit detailing any issues found or parts replaced along with test results and checks performed. The period of performance is one base year plus two option years for a potential three-year total for these services.

Performance Work Statement (PWS)

Preventive and Software Maintenance of Zeiss 520 micro-CT

28 February 2024

C.1 BACKGROUND

In support of its mission and customer programs, the Materials Response and Design Branch (MRDB) of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) relies upon the Zeiss Xradia 520 X-ray Computerized Tomography

(CT) Scanner which is a specialized instrument designed to combine a series of X-ray images taken from different angles and uses computer processing to create three–dimensional (3D) volumetric images of materials. The system was originally delivered in September 2015 with 1 (one) year of maintenance and has had regular maintenance since its installation via contract numbers W911QX19P0023 and

W911QX22P0021, which has included two X-ray source replacements. This is a highly complex instrument whose hardware and software require regular maintenance in order to remain fully operational and meet performance parameters, such as a sub-micron voxel size and feature detectability on the order of microns. This high resolution requires extreme precision and routine calibrations to meet imaging requirements. The preventative maintenance service contract that is requested will be for a service contract period of one (1) base year along with one (2) option years. The Zeiss 520 X-ray micro-CT

Scanner is currently located at the Army Research Laboratory in Aberdeen, MD which is where performance will take place.

C.2 OBJECTIVE

The objective of this request is to obtain a service contract and software upgrades that allows the continued, uninterrupted, comprehensive preventative maintenance of the Zeiss 520 X-ray micro-CT

Scanner and prevent any lapse in coverage.
