PREBID QUESTIONS

DICKINSON BUILDING

1. They are requesting underpinning piles to support 51.3 kips. Ram Jack’s largest capacity underpinning pile is the 3 ½” pile with guide sleeve that can support 49.0 kips. They will need an additional pile for each grade beam to make the 3 1/2” work.

The pile components specified within “Products and Materials” can achieve 51.3-kip design compression capacity.

2. For the support of the column footings, a column on each side needs a pile battered 10 degrees. We cannot do this with side load brackets. Are they able to switch these to new construction brackets?

This is likely feasible but will need to be submitted and reviewed at the shop drawing phase.

3. Specifications for helical piles call for a compression capacity of 51.3 kips, however manufacturers are stating that the maximum load a bracket can hold is 50 kips. Is this sufficient? If not, can you provide a manufacturer who has a suitable system?

The pile components specified within “Products and Materials” can achieve 51.3-kip

4. Can you confirm that the intention is to pour 5’ grade beam sections at each pile location, install piles, and then pour the grade beam sections between piles?

Confirmed.

5. Do the temporary helical piers need to meet the same strength requirements as the permanent installations? Can the temporary piers be left in place, or do they need to be removed it prior to completing the project?

Temporary helical piers can be left in place, but may need to be disengaged.

6. G0.02 requires contractor to retain a PE to provide an E&S plan and specification as applicable to contractors means and methods for executing soil disturbing work. Since there is no E&S plan can an allowance for this scope of work be provided for bidding purposes?

E&S Plan – Contractor to include price for anticipated work.

7. Is it acceptable to provide and install comparable Helicals that can achieve the ultimate load required of 102.6 kips as listed on B0.01 and shown on B5.01?

Alternative plans and designs may be feasible but will need to be submitted by a registered engineer and reviewed at the shop drawing phase.

8. For the support of the column footings, a column on each side needs a pile battered 10 degrees. We cannot do this with side load brackets. Is it acceptable to switch these to new construction brackets? Note: We are working on other options for this issue but have not found a solution.

This is likely feasible but will need to be submitted and reviewed at the shop drawing phase.

9. Note C under termination criteria on B0.01 states each helical pile shall achieve 51.3 kip design compression capacity. Our largest capacity underpinning pile is the 3 ½” pile with sleeves that can support 49 kips. Can we add an additional pile for each grade beam to make the 3 ½” work?

10. The pile components specified within “Products and Materials” can achieve 51.3-kip

MAIN BUILDING

1. The required load is unclear. It appears to be 9.6 kips allowable capacity. Can you verify that?

Confirmed.

2. Also, the borings are showing very dense layers (100 blow count) starting about 6 feet down and continues until refusal to at least 14 feet. Our only option is to pre-drill 10 ft, insert a driven pile, and grout it.

This is acceptable provided the required resistance is met.

3. Please confirm that the allowable capacity for the required load is 9.6 kips on sheet B0.01 on note 3.2.2 under Termination Criteria.

Confirmed.

4. The borings on B0.02 are showing very dense layers (100 blow count) starting about 6 feet down and continues until refusal to at least 14 feet. Is it acceptable to pre-drill 10 ft, insert a driven pile, and grout it?

This is acceptable provided the required resistance is met.
