Project Locations: Various Town Roads Madison, Connecticut
Owner: Town of Madison, Connecticut
Address: Office of the First Selectwoman Town Offices Building 8 Campus Drive Madison, Connecticut 06443
2. Intent of Project Specifications and Scope of Work
A. Intent of Project Specifications
The Town of Madison is seeking qualified bidders to replace bituminous concrete curb that is missing or damaged by winter snow removal operations, backfill the new curb and restore the grass shoulder in accordance with the Scope of Work. The attached Curb Replacement List provides the approximate locations and lengths for curb replacement.
The contractor will provide all labor, equipment, traffic control and materials to complete the Work. The contractor will haul the bituminous curb mix from the Town’s pavement supplier, Tilcon Connecticut, Inc. and will provide copies of the Tilcon product tickets, that reference this project. The town will pay the Tilcon invoices for bituminous curb mix used on this project after receiving the product tickets and invoices.
B. Scope of Work
The new curb limits will be marked with white paint by the Department of Public Works prior to the start of Work. The contractor will saw cut the existing curb at the limits and will prepare the area for receiving new curb. Preparation includes; exposing the asphalt road surface where the curb is to be replaced, removing soil and damaged curb pieces and sweeping clean/applying tack coat to all surfaces where new curb is to be placed. Curb will be placed at the same location where damaged curb was removed and in line with the adjoining curb so that the existing road width is unchanged. Curb sections to be installed that exceed 15-feet in length shall be formed using an asphalt curb machine and mold that closely matches the adjoining curb. Bituminous concrete shall not be installed in rainy or wet conditions.
All soil and curb waste materials shall be removed and disposed of by the contractor. Disposal of waste material at the town’s Brush & Leaf facility is not allowed.
Prepare the subgrade for topsoil placement after the bituminous curb is installed, cools and becomes firm. Subgrade preparation includes; removing large rocks (over 2-inches), roots and curb remnants, raking and compacting the disturbed soil behind the curb to provide a suitable surface for topsoil placement. Where the depth of prepared subgrade below the top of curb exceeds 6 inches, backfill and compact the lower portion with suitable subgrade soil.
Place topsoil over the prepared subgrade behind the curb. The topsoil shall be fertile natural sandy loam free of stones (over 0.5 inches), lumps, roots, sticks, weeds and subsoil. It must contain a minimum of 4% to 10% organic matter and maintain a pH range between 6.0 and 7.5.
Hand tamp or lightly roll the topsoil to prevent excessive settling. Rake and smooth the topsoil to seamlessly match the top elevation of the new curb and blend evenly to the existing ground. The final topsoil layer after settlement shall have a minimum 4” to 6” depth.
After topsoil is placed, apply grass seed mix approved by the town at a rate of 4 to 6 pounds per 1,000 square feet of prepared topsoil and lightly rake. Apply a thin layer of straw mulch after seeding to achieve a 75% coverage.
