Siding and Stone Re-pointing:

h. Carefully remove all loose mortar from surfaces to expose the stone and using an air compressor and chisel methods.

NOTE: The Contractor shall demonstrate to the DNR Project Managers the point finish technique. This demonstration shall be performed on 12 SF of the surface. This mortar shall be allowed to dry for one (1) week to determine that the new mortar matches the color and style of the original mortar. Modify mortar mix as necessary to achieve the appropriate color.

i. Repoint approximately 2000 Square Feet of interior and exterior stone wall surface according to Color and the style should match existing adjacent mortar. Properly re-caulk all windows/doors that transition to masonry surfaces as per the manufacturer’s written instructions.

i. Remove all existing mortar down to a depth required to expose sound, un-weathered mortar from the wall and blow out all joints to remove fine particles and rinse all areas with clean water. Deep joints are to be back pointed (layered). Tarp the areas to catch debris.

ii. Cut out mortar by hand with chisel and resilient mallet or pre-ap-proved Pneumatic chisels. Do not use power operated grinders without the Engineer’s written approval. Handheld power grinders shall only be approved for use when removing hard Portland mortar joints.

iii. If approved in writing by the DNR Project Managers, cut out only the center of the hard Portland mortar joints using an angle grinder with a diamond impregnated metal blade. Remove the re-maining mortar by hand with a chisel and resilient mallet.

iv. The Contractor shall install new mortar between the existing stone on the stone wall, matching the original mortar style. Install the mor-tar in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

v. Joints must be sound and free from dust, dirt, grease, laitance and/or any other coating or foreign substance which may prevent proper adhesion. Remove all mortar down to a depth required to expose sound, un-weathered mortar and blow out all joints to remove fine particles and rinse all areas with clean water.

vi. It is recommended that suitable PPE be used, such as but not limited to safety goggles, gloves, and a dust mask equipped with P-2 filters (or equivalent) be worn for protection.

vii. Pointing mortar shall be a traditional hydraulic lime mix, that is mixed thoroughly, to lessen shrinkage upon drying

a. 1 part Lime Putty and sand, proportioned by volume ac-cording to the results of the Aggregate Void Space Ratio test, with pigments as specified by the manufacturer. Mix as specified in “Mixing” Article

b. Premix: Bedding/Pointing Mortar and Fine Sand Butter Joint Mortar

c. All ingredients shall be measured by volume using pre-established uniform measures. Shovel measuring is not permitted.

d. Mix mortars in an approved vertical-shaft mixer, Imer or equivalent.

e. Begin by adding ½ the sand to a clean, dry mixer. Next, add the putty and the prewetted pigments prescribed in the mortar formula. Lastly, add the remaining sand.

f. When mixing lime putty mortar from putty and sand (not premixed from the factory) - it should be mixed for at least 20 minutes and shall be mixed at least 5 days prior to installation. Place mixed mortar with no air pockets in plastic buckets or plastic barrels with four cups of water covering the top surface (to prevent premature carbona-tion) and lids. Greater workability and better mortar per-formance is achieved with less water added during mix-ing and with longer mixing times.

g. Re-mixing without adding water improves the workabil-ity of lime mortar. Mortar should be knocked-up, drill-mixed with an eggbeater-style mix attachment, or re-mixed in the vertical shaft mixer for at least 3-5 minutes just prior to installation. Mortar that has stood in a pan or bucket for more than an hour should be remixed/knocked up in this way to improve workability. Mortar so re-mixed, when “set” on a trowel, should stick to the trowel when turned upside down. Mortar can be re-worked in-definitely, without adding water, however in hot dry weather a minimum of water can be added as long as the original water content is not increased. Mortar should be replaced into buckets and covered with water when not using.

h. The new mortar should be color matched to the original mortar.

viii. Moisten the joint using clean water. If the surface is allowed to dry out before applying mortar mix, this step must be repeated. This is very important. The mortar should be applied one lift using appro-priate pointing tools. Place the mortar into the joint so that it matches the original joint profile. More water may be required if ambient temperature rises. The mixing may be done by hand, stirring until the mortar is thoroughly mixed. The working time will vary, de-pending upon temperature and humidity. Using excessive water in the mix may affect the color of the repair.

ix. Periodically mist mortar joints using clean water for at least a 72 hour period. The timing for initial water misting will vary with am-bient conditions. Cooler, damp conditions may require waiting sev-eral hours before beginning the curing process. Mist several times a day as necessary. Should access to the repairs be impossible over a period of time, plastic may be used to cover them temporarily. The application of plastic, however, does not remove the need for formal curing techniques. Do not use water or solvents immediately after application to wash off excess mortar.

x. Replace all missing, cracked and objectionably spalled mortar.

Any replacement or fill stone must replicate the existing stone in style color and shape. Unit Price And approximately 20 stones.

NOTE: If the Contractor will encounter unsuitable mortar material beyond 2” deep, notify the DNR Project Manager.

g. Properly dispose of construction debris from the job site and leave it in a pre-construction condition after completion.

h. The Contractor shall clean up the job site to the satisfaction of the DNR Project Managers and Facility Manager. This work shall include sweeping walkways, raking surrounding areas, and removal of all excess materials and debris. Pick up all nails on a daily basis.

i. Any tire ruts, holes, etc., left by the Contractor shall be filled with topsoil and seeded to a pre-construction condition.

NOTE: All quantities and sizes listed above are approximate.

The Contractor shall be responsible to obtain his/her measurements for the project and bidding purposes.

NOTE: The Contractor shall at the end of each work day, inspect and

“sweep” the area with a magnet, and pick up any nails and/ or debris.
