PROJECT DESCRIPTION/SERVICES REQUESTED

Provide Phase 100 Study and Phase 300 Schematic Design services to evaluate and provide an assessment of the overall condition of the Mill drop box, flutter wheel, connection to the base, sluiceway tie-in to the drop box, and the pitman arm.

The saw mill is a reproduction of a mill that would have been on site in the late 1700’S. The current mill was constructed in 1984. The supports under the mill were replaced about 10 years ago and are now steel beams cased in lumber. The mill is nearly 40 years old and is a major program element for the park.

mailto:smithD76@michigan.gov

The assessment shall identify potential issues with the mill noted above along with known items the park has identified including:

• Issues with the internal gate, it never seals all the way (it has been rebuilt in it’s present configuration). It can also be difficult to open and close (the park has to shut down the mill to maintain).

• Ongoing issues with the drop box anchoring to the slab. New angle brackets have been added and constantly has to be shimmed.

• Some rot in the above-mentioned features has been identified. The park is worried that at some point something major will happen, like the flutter wheel supports breaking, and there will be nothing the park can do short term to protect the revenue stream.

• Improvements need to be made on the gate to minimize water loss.

Plans for re-working the drop box and drop gate can use modern elements, but repairs need to hide these (like the steel beams cased in wood).

Pictures of the existing mill are attached for reference.
