About this file

This document is a Statement of Objectives (SOO) outlining the salient characteristics required for a press brake metal forming tool to be procured for the Aircraft Structural Maintenance section. The press brake is intended to replace current hand-forming processes using hammers and forming blocks, which are slower, less precise, and frequently result in part damage. The equipment will enable the maintenance section to maximize production output for maintenance actions requiring multiple precision bends and to produce duplicate parts for commonly replaced in-shop aircraft components, particularly EGRESS parts and leg guards.

The press brake must meet specific technical and operational requirements, including the capability to operate on compressed air at 100 PSI or less and/or 220-volt outlet power (with manufacturer-provided transformer if necessary), precision servo motors capable of 0.001-inch repeatability with a minimum of one servo motor per driving ram, and no hydraulic systems requiring refill or servicing. The system must feature a rigid frame capable of handling off-centered loads without distortion, CNC control with on-board diagnostics, automatic thickness detection, and a rear safety fence or cage that stops ram operations when opened. The vendor must provide a minimum 18-month warranty on parts and labor from the date of delivery regardless of operating hours. The equipment must be capable of producing EGRESS leg guards without additional hand forming, and the tooling die company has already begun mock-up designs for commonly used parts that do not require heat treatment.

SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS FOR Press Brake

The press brake is a metal forming tool that enables maintainers to make precision bends in the metal forming process that also allows clearance for previous bends and additional obstructions encounter with multi-contoured parts. This system will allow the Aircraft Structural Maintenance section to maximize production output for all maintenance actions that require multiple bends within close tolerance of other bends or to quickly produce precise duplicate parts for commonly replaced in-shop produced aircraft parts. At this time, the Aircraft Structural Maintenance section is having to utilize hand forming parts using hammers and forming blocks.

This process is slower, less precise and often results in damage to the part being manufactured, forcing the member to restart the manufacturing process. A press brake would allow us to reproduce parts with computer precision while also enabling close proximity bending often encountered in mass produced EGRESS parts.

The Press Brake must have the following Salient Characteristics:

• Unit must be capable of running off compressed air at 100 PSI or less and/or 220v outlet, unless the manufacture provides and installs a wired transformer to increase current capabilities to match machine requirements.

• Have precision Servo motors capable of high precision repeatability to within 0.001”

• A minimum of one servo motor per driving ram, to increase production rates while ensuring strength capabilities.

• No Hydraulic systems that would require refill, servicing, or the creation of a new waste stream process.

• A rigid frame capable of handling off-centered loads without frame twist or distortion

• CNC controlled system with on-board computer that is capable of operating all machine processes and running machine diagnostics

• Capable of automatic thickness detection without additional input to ensure precise bends without the need of spacing tools

• A rear safety fence or cage to ensure safety, but that can be opened to service the equipment or retrieve parts. This system bust stop ram operations when opened to prevent injury.

• It must include a minimum warranty of 18 months on parts and labor from the date of delivery no matter how many hours the shop has put on the unit.

• It is the only tool capable of making Egress leg guards without additional hand forming

• The tooling die company has already started to mock-up designs for forming commonly used parts without the need to heat treat.
