About this file

This is a Statement of Need for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) laboratory located at 78 Magruder Road, Highlands, New Jersey. The procurement is for two add-on multi-channel aquatic respirometry systems with compatible specialized chambers and custom-molded O-rings designed for 190 mm internal diameter respirometer chambers. The equipment will be used to expand laboratory capacity to measure metabolic rates, oxygen consumption, and physiological responses of aquatic organisms using automated methods under strictly-controlled experimental conditions.

The contractor must supply two systems, each with minimum 4-channel automation capability for simultaneous monitoring of multiple independent aquatic organisms plus a baseline control channel. The systems must function as add-on resting respirometry equipment operating on standard US electrical configuration (110V/60Hz) and include high-precision vertical acrylic chambers with 190 mm ID and 800 mm length, as well as four additional acrylic chambers with 240 mm ID and 250 mm depth. The contractor must also provide four additional O-rings for the 190 mm ID chambers, engineered to maintain gas-tight, hermetic seals during measurement cycles. The hardware must natively integrate with the Sandy Hook Lab's existing Autoresp 3.0 automated respirometry software to control automated user-defined cycles (Flush, Wait, and Measure) while acquiring real-time oxygen consumption data. Delivery must occur within 8 weeks during normal business hours (8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday) to the James J Howard Marine Science Laboratory in Highlands, New Jersey. The designated point of contact is Andrij Horodysky, reachable at (732) 872-3000 or andrij.horodysky@noaa.gov.

STATEMENT OF NEED

BACKGROUND / SCOPE / MISSION: The National Marine Fisheries Service laboratory at 78 Magruder Road, Highlands, NJ requires the procurement of two add-on multi-channel aquatic respirometry systems and compatible specialized chambers and custom-molded O-rings engineered explicitly for 190 mm ID respirometer chambers to ensure a gas-tight, hermetic seal.

This equipment will be utilized to expand the lab’s capacity to measure the metabolic rates, oxygen consumption, and physiological responses of aquatic organisms using automated methods under strictly-controlled experimental conditions.

INTENDED USE / PURPOSE:

Contractor must meet and/or exceed the following salient and functional requirements:

To ensure experimental continuity, data accuracy, and compatibility with existing laboratory workflows, the requested equipment must meet the following technical specifications:

● Multi-Channel Automation capability: Each of the two systems must support a minimum of a 4-channel configuration to allow for the simultaneous, high-throughput monitoring of multiple independent aquatic organisms alongside a baseline control channel.

● System Configuration & Compatibility: Must function seamlessly as an add-on resting respirometry systems operating on standard US electrical configurations (110V/60Hz).

● Chamber Dimension Engineering: * Must include high-precision vertical acrylic respirometer chambers with an Internal Diameter (ID) of 190 mm and a Length (D) of 800 mm (horizontal chambers included with add-on systems) as well as four additional acrylic respirometry chambers with an Internal Diameter (ID) of 240 mm and a Depth

(D) of 250 mm. Combined, these chambers will accommodate specific target specimen sizes without restricting natural resting postures. Lastly, must also include 4 additional O-rings for ID 190 mm respirometer chamber, as this is a high-use, high-wear item.

○ Must feature exact-fit O-rings engineered specifically to seal respirometer chambers to maintain a strict gas-tight, hermetic seal during intermittent-flow measurement cycles.

● Intermittent-Flow Respirometry Software Integration: The hardware must natively integrate with the Sandy hook Lab’s existing Autoresp 3.0 automated respirometry software capable of controlling automated user-defined cycles (Flush, Wait, and Measure) to prevent hypoxia in resting specimens while acquiring real-time oxygen consumption data.

DELIVERY LOCATION: NOAA NMFS James J Howard Marine Scienced Laboratory, 78 Magruder Road Highlands, NJ, 007732. Andrij Horodysky is the designated POC. Andrij can be reached Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm or by email andrij.horodysky@noaa.gov, work phone: (732) 872-3000.
