About this file

This is a Request for Proposal (RFP) Amendment 1 for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate for a Graphite Rotary Furnace. The RFP No. PR451983 was issued on August 9, 2023, with Amendment 1 dated March 23, 2026. The ORNL Procurement Officer is Genna Pence (pencegl@ornl.gov). The amendment incorporates questions and answers clarifying technical requirements for the furnace system.

Key technical specifications include: vacuum capability is required to purge the chamber of trace air; production will be batch-based with a goal of 500g or more per batch (not continuous); kernels start as microspheres with tap density of 0.5 to 1.25 g/cc and sizes ranging from 0.6mm to 5.0mm, shrinking by a factor of 1.5 to 4 upon final conversion to diameters of 0.2 to 2.0mm with final bulk density ranging from 1.5 to 14.5 g/cc; expected volatiles evolved during processing include water, trace organics, CO, and CO2. The project timeline remains to be determined (TBD).

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (RFP)

1. INTRODUCTION

Date: 03/23/2026 RFP No.: PR451983 Amendment No.: 1 RFP Description: Graphite Rotary Furnace

Subject: RFP for the ORNL Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate Graphite Rotary Furnace In Response Refer to: RFP No. PR451983 Graphite Rotary Furnace

ORNL Procurement Officer: Genna Pence

Email: pencegl@ornl.gov

Amendment 1 dated 03/23/2026 extends incorporates the following Questions & Answers:

Question Answer Is vacuum a requirement for this? What is the necessity of vacuum for this process?

Yes. The vacuum is needed to purge the chamber of trace air.

What is the intended production rate? We aren't planning to have a continuous process, so I am not sure about the question. The goal is to have a single batch be 500g or more.

What is the bulk density and particle size of the kernels?

The kernels start out as microspheres with tap density of 0.5 to 1.25 g/cc and sizes ranging from 0.6mm to 5.0mm. Upon final conversion, the kernels will shrink by a factor of 1.5 to 4, resulting in diameters of 0.2 to 2.0mm. The final bulk density ranges from 1.5 to 14.5 g/cc.

What are the expected volatiles that evolve from this process?

Water, trace organics, CO, CO2

What is the project timeline? This is still TBD.
