About this file
Attachment C is a Statement of Requirements dated May 21, 2025, for a 5-axis CNC machine tool for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The document specifies detailed technical requirements for a high-precision machining tool, including non-negotiable features such as a Siemens or Fanuc Controller, mill turn configuration with multiple spindles and a turret, high pressure coolant system, simultaneous 5-axis machining capabilities, and advanced measurement and calibration features.
The machine specifications include maximum dimensions of 400 inches in length and 175 inches in depth, with a maximum weight of 50,000 pounds. Key technical capabilities include a primary/sub spindle speed range of 0-4000 rpm, mill spindle speed range of 0-20,000 rpm, workpiece diameter up to 26 inches, Z-axis travel of at least 120 inches, and a tool storage capacity of at least 75 slots. The requirement is part of a federal contract opportunity (Solicitation Number PR352956) under the Department of Energy, aimed at expanding ORNL's machining capabilities.

Attachment C, Statement of Requirements
May 21, 2025
To enable project success, ORNL is looking to expand their capabilities in 5-axis CNC machine tools. Certain non-negotiable features have been identified for the 5-axis CNC machine tool and are listed below.
Technical requirements for a 5-axis mill turn CNC machine tool are listed below:
• Siemens or Fanuc Controller
• Mill turn configuration with one main spindle, one sub spindle, one milling spindle, and one turret.
• High pressure coolant (1000 psi, 8 gallons per min minimum)
• Simultaneous 5-axis machining
• Cooling circulation in spindle motors and ball screws
• Turret
• Steady rest for turret
• Non-contact measurement for tool length and damage
• Mist collector
• Control console with both tactile and touchscreen capabilities
• In-machine workpiece measuring system radio signal transmission type touch sensor
• Chip conveyor
• Direct scale feedback on X and Y axis for mill spindle and lower turret
• Automatic built-in axis correction/calibration that can be performed in under one hour
