About this file

This Medical Center Policy (MCP) outlines the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) general policy for the Montana VA Health Care System. The policy establishes comprehensive guidelines for conducting analytical patient testing outside of clinical laboratory facilities, with a focus on ensuring accurate and precise test results. Key requirements include: only trained and competent employees may perform POCT, all Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendments (CLIA) waived tests must include quality control materials, and each testing site must conduct proficiency testing at least twice annually.

The document details specific responsibilities for individuals performing POCT, the Ancillary Testing Coordinator, and the Chief of Pathology. Responsibilities include demonstrating competency, performing quality control checks, following test procedures, identifying patients with two unique identifiers, and participating in proficiency testing. The policy is effective from July 6, 2020, with a recertification date of July 6, 2025, and is designed to comply with regulations from CLIA, College of American Pathologists (CAP), and The Joint Commission (TJC). The policy aims to provide maximum confidence in patient care quality through rigorous testing standards and oversight.
