About this file

This is a Statement of Need for specialized marine cables issued by NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) under purchase order 145027-25-0084. The NOAA OAR PMEL Moored CO2 Group requires specialized cabling to support sensors on scientific ocean observing moorings as part of their mission to advance understanding of the ocean carbon cycle and climate impacts. The cables will be deployed in harsh marine environments at 35+ mooring sites that collect long-term oceanographic data, and are needed to replace worn cables, construct new moorings, and restock spare supplies.

The technical specifications require all cables to use Subconn connectors and include five different cable assembly types with specific quantities: ten SAMI pH Interface Cable Assemblies (12 ft, 18 AWG shielded SOOW cable), ten SBE 16+ Interface Cables (12 ft, 18 AWG shielded SOOW cable), five SBE 37 Cables (12 ft, 18/3 SO shielded cable), ten 10-foot cable assemblies with 20-8 cable, and ten 6-foot cable assemblies with 20-6 cable. Delivery is required by November 30, 2025, though earlier delivery is acceptable. Products should be shipped via UPS account 18A99F to Randy Bott at the Seattle facility. Administrative contact for invoicing is Ben Carlson, with technical contacts including Randy Bott and LT Nicholas Azzopardi as Research Operations Manager.

STATEMENT OF NEED: Cables

(PO# 145027-25-0084)

PURPOSE:

The NOAA OAR PMEL Moored CO2 Group is in need of specialized cabling to support sensors installed on scientific ocean observing moorings.

BACKGROUND:

NOAA OAR PMEL Carbon group mission is to advance our scientific understanding of the ocean carbon cycle and how it is changing over time in support of NOAA's commitment to improve the Nation's ability to anticipate and respond to climate impacts and to conserve and manage healthy oceans, coastal ecosystems, and marine resources. Supporting this research requires precise data collection using sensors installed in remote locations including extended installations on ocean moorings.

Due to the harsh marine environments that these cables are deployed in, the cables are subject to wear and corrosion over time. The cables included in this order will be installed on some of the 35+ mooring sites that collect long-term observations. These sites collect a myriad of oceanographic data with multiple scientific sensors. These cables will replace worn and damaged cables at existing mooring sites, allow for construction of new moorings, and restock the group’s spare cable supply to ensure no delay or loss of data collection.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: Cables must use Subconn connectors.
