About this file

This file contains a Questions and Answers document related to hoist systems at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) PULSE facility. The document reveals that MSTS has three hoists: two shaft hoists (U1a and U1h) and one mobile rescue hoist (MRH), with the U1h hoist primarily manufactured by SIEMAG. The last service dates for the hoists are November 2024 (U1a), January 2025 (U1h), and September 2024 (MRH). The government anticipates long-term operation of these hoists and is planning to accept a new MRH as a backup and develop an additional shaft with a new hoist.

The related federal contract opportunity (Solicitation Number PG-25-001) is a pre-solicitation for a five-year technical support subcontract with the Department of Energy. The potential offeror will provide comprehensive technical support services for the hoist systems, including system evaluation, component analysis, identifying safety and reliability issues, developing spare parts lists, conducting technical evaluations, providing on-site support and training, and supporting documentation development. The contractor is explicitly prohibited from performing hands-on work or providing design, fabrication, or material procurement for safety-significant systems. Task orders will be issued against a master agreement, focusing on enhancing the operability and reliability of the PULSE facility's hoist systems.

1) Question: Total number of hoists?

Response: PULSE has 3 hoists, two shaft hoists (U1a and U1h), and one mobile rescue hoist (MRH) that utilizes the two shafts.

2) Question: Is it possible to get the Manufacturer and Model numbers for the hoist systems involved?

Response: The hoists do not have a single manufacturer or model number as they consist of many components. If there a specific component around the system, we would be glad to provide those. The U1h hoist was primarily manufactured by SIEMAG, for the U1a hoist and MRH there was not a primary manufacturer. There is not a model number for the hoists just individual components.

3) Question: Current functional hours of use for each hoist system?

Response: MSTS does not track “functional hours”. Both surface and underground facilities have 24x7x365 security fire detection, other monitoring. We obviously require immediate transportation to the underground facility in the event of an emergency. Thus, we always plan for at least one hoist to be operable.

4) Question: Last service dates for each hoist?

Response: U1a Hoist: November 2024

U1h Hoist: January 2025 MRH: September 2024

5) Question: Any "end of life" manufacturer information on each hoist?

Response: At this time the hoists do not have an “end of life”. The Government anticipates PULSE will be operated for many decades. MSTS is in the process of accepting a new MRH to aid as a backup for the current unit. MSTS is planning an additional shaft with a new hoist.
