About this file

The document is a comprehensive Parks & Recreation Sign Standards manual for Pierce County, Washington, detailing comprehensive design guidelines for park signage across vehicular and pedestrian scales. The manual provides detailed specifications for various sign types including park entry, directional, mile markers, park information, playground rules, trail entry, and general signs. The standards cover graphic design elements, material specifications, color usage, symbol libraries, mounting requirements, and foundation details. The document was originally created on 02/23/2017 and has been updated multiple times, with the most recent update noted as 06/01/2025.

The manual specifies precise technical requirements for sign construction, including recommended materials like Corten steel panels, aluminum, specific paint colors (using Pantone 7701, 7741, and 7579), and mounting techniques. It provides detailed structural design criteria including live load, wind load, and seismic considerations, with specific requirements for concrete strength, reinforcing materials, and anchor bolt specifications. The sign standards aim to create a consistent, recognizable visual identity for Pierce County Parks & Recreation, with careful attention to typography (using Helvetica Neue), symbol design, and color usage that ensures readability and aesthetic cohesion across different sign types and park environments.
