About this file
This document is an Interpretive Programming and Education Exhibit Scoping Meeting Report prepared by the Tennessee State Parks division involving three state parks: Cedars of Lebanon State Park, Old Stone Fort State Park, and South Cumberland State Park. The project encompasses exhibit space updates and interactive educational installations across these three park locations. Cedars of Lebanon State Park's Nature Center project, scoped on August 7, 2025, targets school groups in grades 5 and below from local and regional areas, with exhibit themes focused on glades as unique resources, WPA and New Deal history, Elsie Quarterman's ecological work, and karst topography. Old Stone Fort State Park's Museum Theater project, scoped on August 20, 2025, targets families with children and campers in grades 4-5 from regional areas, with themes centered on prehistory and archaeology, flora and fauna, the Duck River, historic park activity, and geology. South Cumberland State Park's Visitor Center project, scoped on July 30, 2025, targets middle school students and regional school groups, with focus areas including local nature, Cumberland Plateau geology, Civilian Conservation Corps legacy, Tracy City mining history, and conservation stewardship. Each project allocates approximately 1,560 to 2,172 square feet of exhibit space.
Each of the three parks has received a proposed project budget of $70,000, with total combined project funding of $210,000. Key priorities across projects include maximizing storage space, improving and updating existing cave exhibits, repairing or rebuilding interactive geology exhibits, restoring historic structures such as "The Hut" at Old Stone Fort, and implementing ambient sound and audio-visual enhancements in theater and exhibit spaces. The initiatives aim to enhance educational impact through interactive, thematic exhibits; increase visitor engagement and satisfaction to encourage repeat visits and community pride; and promote stewardship of natural and cultural resources. Meeting attendees included Planning and Exhibits staff, Park Managers, Interpretive Leads, and related administrative personnel from the state parks system. The projects emphasize immersive, interactive elements and thematic flow throughout exhibit spaces to deepen visitor connections and support local heritage tourism across these three state park locations.

We propose to create a series of flowing exhibit sections highlighting native plants and wildlife, regional geology, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) history, and Tracy City's mining legacy. These improvements will deepen visitor connections and promote local heritage tourism.
