IA LAN/Cable Infrastructure Requirements

Version 2.2

8 May 2014

Prepared by the Office of Information Operations (OIO) 8

Section 3: Cable Requirements

BIA/BIE Cabling requirements are separated into the following functional categories:

Server to Core/Stack

VoIP System to Core/Stack

Analog Connections

IDF to IDF/MDF

Wall to IDF

Wall to Desk

Within these functional categories both copper and fiber connections are required along with patch and cross connect components.

3.1 Copper Requirements

All new cables are to be CAT 6/CAT 6a compliant. This is based upon the need for voice, video and security applications as well as the use of high-speed trunking between Ethernet clients and switches. The error ranges for CAT5e is 1-26% while CAT6 is 0-7%.

IA will standardize on (4) CAT 6/CAT 6a cables for each wall outlet and will be termed a “Quad Drop”.

The Quad Drops are to be used for:

Figure 1: Quad Drop Usage and Color Code

Local building codes must be consulted to determine when and where to use Plenum and non-Plenum cabling. Local building codes must also be consulted for use of aerial and buried cable.

Engineering for cable troughs is to be ANSI 569-A compliant cable management system with the ANSI

569-A methods of utilizing “J” hooks being a last resort. Examples include permits and regulations

Designation Usage Cable/Outlet Color

A Analog BLUE

B Network Printers ORANGE

C Security/Video GREEN

D Data/VoIP YELLOW

* New construction must be built and designed to meet the Quad-Drop standards.

For sites where it is not practical or near impossible to follow these standards, the cabling design may be modified depending on floor plans, office layouts, shared work spaces, cubicles, conference rooms, etc. In these instances, a custom cable design will be implemented. All custom cable designs must be approved by the Telecom Division Chief prior to implementation.

Section 8: Wall to IDF

All Quad Drops are to be numbered according to TIA/EIA-606-A (Administration Standard for the

Telecommunications Infrastructure of Commercial Buildings). At the workspace the wall plate shall be color coded per the function assigned in Figure 1. The wall plate shall be organized as viewed from the workspace as follows:

Figure 5: Wall to IDF

Each cable of the Quad Drop will connect a Patch Panel in the IDF closet to a single quad outlet plate at the workspace.

A single four pair CAT 6/ CAT 6a cable shall terminate on an IDF CAT6 patch panel assigned to each of the Quad Drop color coded functions in Figure 1. The CAT6 compliant Patch Panels may be of 24, 48, 72 or 96 jack configurations. Wiring configurations will be done per the ANSI TIA/EIA-568-B. Each panel shall be labeled according to the function they are assigned from Figure 6. Telephone (analog lines) and

Data systems will be placed in separate racks. Voice over IP systems and data systems may be located in the same racks, however cables shall be provided with strain relief and each cable labeled according to

TIA/EIA-606-A.

Figure 6: Patch Panel Labeling

To provide Data/Voice and Security services to any workstation location, the CAT 6/CAT 6a cable within the IDF shall be cross connected to the required Edge Switch located in the IDF. The corresponding jack on the front of the switch in the IDF shall be cross connected to the corresponding jack on the front of the

A-BLUE/ORANGE/GREEN/YELLOW patch panel in the IDF.

Section 9: Wall to Desk Connections

All CAT 6/ CAT 6a cables in use shall terminate in the appropriate color-coded jack of the Quad Drop outlet jack. The cable color, including patch cable, used shall match that of the outlet it is to be connected

to. All cables are to be CAT 6 compliant and of sufficient length and are not to exceed the maximum distance specifications.
