About this file

This is an informational guide from the Michigan Department of State (MDOS) outlining the documentation requirements for individuals applying for a Michigan driver's license or state identification card. The guide details the four mandatory categories of documentation that all applicants must provide: proof of Social Security number, proof of legal presence, proof of identity, and proof of residency. The document addresses compliance with federal REAL ID requirements, which allow Michigan residents to use compliant licenses or state IDs for domestic air travel and entry into certain federal facilities. The guide also explains enhanced licenses and state IDs, which can serve as alternatives to U.S. passports for land and sea reentry from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. Application verification processes through the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system may require more than one business day for immigration-related documents.

For proof of Social Security number, applicants must submit one document such as a Social Security card, W-2 form, SSA 1099 form, non-SSA 1099 form, or pay stub with SSN, with verification conducted through the Social Security Administration. Proof of legal presence requires one original document with no copies accepted, including options such as a valid U.S. passport, Permanent Resident Card, Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization, certified birth certificate, or unexpired foreign passport with valid U.S. visa. Proof of identity requires one original document, with options including state or Canadian driver's licenses, U.S. military photo IDs, federal or state government employee photo IDs, and school records from accredited institutions. Proof of residency requires two documents dated within the last 90 days displaying the applicant's name and Michigan residential address, with electronic copies accepted; family member documents may be used if family relationship is established. The guide emphasizes that names and dates of birth must match across documents, with official name change documentation required when discrepancies exist, and notes that P.O. boxes cannot serve as residential addresses.
