# Contractor Questions & Answers

4 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

What will be the source for the selected photographs’ interpretive content?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

Park staff will provide basic interpretive content – largely names, dates and brief facts for each image.

4a CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

Has any interpretive content for the images been prepared as part of the recently developed exhibits in the two park locations? If so, is that the interpretive information to be included for the slideshows?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

Yes, captions have been written for the current exhibits, and the content of those captions should be included in the audio version. There is also an introductory narrative that should be included as its own “slide” ahead of the 20 images.

4b CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

What is the Government’s expectation of how the historic information provided about the Merrill photograph collection is to be used?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

It is to be incorporated into the audio script that provides description for visually impaired individuals. The interpretive content is specific to each image, with exception of an introduction which should precede the 20 images. The audio script including any interpretive information and the descriptions will be approved by park staff.

5 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

How will the two separate slideshow presentations differ?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

They will include different images, based on theme. One will focus on photographs of the native Tlingit community, and the other will focus on photographs that pertain to the Russian Orthodox Church. The complete collection of photographs (over 1100) may be found on the park’s website, www.nps.gov/sitk.

6 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

For all 60 images, is it the Government’s expectation that the 1-minute of recorded audio per image include both descriptive and interpretive content?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

Yes. The interpretive content will be largely limited to names and brief facts.

7 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

Will the audio prepared for the images for the park website be the same as that for the slideshows? If not, how will they differ?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

Yes, the same audio will be used on the website.

8 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

Does the Government want the contractor to deliver a single movie of all the 60 images and their audio, two movies of 20 images and their audio, or 60 individual movies of each image with its audio?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

Two movies of 20 images and their audio, and 60 individual images and their audio.

9 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

What is meant by the descriptions need to be “matched to the digital images the park provides?” (pg. 8)

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

It means the audio should be attached to the images as a movie file.

10 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

What are the Government requirements for the number and gender of voice talent narration samples?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

A minimum of 2 male and 2 female.

11 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

Does the content for the interpretive description of the photos need to be derived from contractor research? or is the contractor going to use the interpretive content already produced by NPS?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

The contractor will use content already produced by NPS.

12 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

All files the contractor will produce are to be in Mpeg 4 format?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

Yes.

13 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

What style of video editing are you looking for? Still shots or a “Ken Burns” style like a video on Discovery Ch8annel? Ken Burns style includes zoom’s and pans across the photos to keep the visuals more interesting

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

A still image is fine. This is not something that will be viewed on a regular basis, it will be available on request if needed for accessibility purposes.

14 CONTRACTOR

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

Yes. Tif images at 1482dpi are available, or jpegs at 800dpi.

15 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

You mentioned that there are 60 images that require narration of 1 minute or less for each photo presentation. You have also required two additional slide presentations featuring 20 images each. Is the purpose of these programs to provide a short synopsis with image changes possibly every 5-10 seconds?

That would mean each program could be less than five minutes? If you would kindly provide a better expectation of what those two slide shows are and how long they would be that will help us with a more accurate bid.

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

The purpose of these programs is to provide the same or as similar as possible of an experience to visitors who are visually impaired, as those visitors who are capable of seeing the exhibit un-aided. To this end, there will be two slideshows/movies that present a sample of 20 images from each exhibit. Each image will be audio described. The audio description for each image should not exceed 1 minute. The full program may in fact be 20 minutes in length, depending on the length of each audio described image.

Similar to the actual exhibit (which has captions but no audio), the images will self-advance following the audio description. There will likely be a few seconds for transition, and another minute or so for the introductory narrative. This is not intended to be a short synopsis to compliment the full exhibit. It is to be an aid for those visitors who are otherwise unable to see the exhibit.

16 CONTRACTOR

QUESTION:

Concerning research what content would be made available? Is this something we could download remotely or will it be necessary for the writer to travel to the Sitka visitor center to do a more thorough job of research?

GOVERNMENT

REPLY:

Captions currently in the exhibit will be provided, as well as other information the park has already researched about the content of the images.

Travel onsite to conduct research is not anticipated to be necessary.

Information provided by the park can be downloaded. It is anticipated that the scriptwriter will be working in close concert with park staff to ensure accuracy, especially in regards to the photographs of the native Tlingit community.
