DESCRIPTION

Statement of Work (SOW)

1. Introduction The Portland VA Medical Center utilizes radio‑frequency identification (RFID) technology to support safe and efficient management of inpatient pharmacy medication kits. RFID-enabled workflows streamline kit fills and exchanges, reduce manual handling, and provide real-time inventory visibility.

2. Background RFID technology has become an essential tool in modern pharmacy inventory management. Published evidence demonstrates that RFID systems improve medication tracking accuracy and reduce restocking errors, ensure timely identification of outdated, missing, or recalled medications, provide superior lot number, expiration, and quantity visibility compared to manual workflows, enhance traceability of high-cost medical supplies, and reduce supervisory oversight and the time spent on manual inventory management.

In VA inpatient pharmacy operations, RFID-enabled kit management supports regulatory compliance, enhances medication safety, and reduces waste associated with expiration or stockouts.
