About this file

This document is a government file outlining specifications for the fabrication of components for 24 Niskin bottles and spare parts. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration requires one set of 24 bottles, with each bottle capable of remotely sampling water from the sea surface down to depths of 6000 meters. The bottles must be fabricated to close tolerances to prevent contamination of samples measuring physical water characteristics such as salinity, dissolved oxygen, and carbon levels. Components for one set of 24 bottles include 12 liter bottles, end caps, flanges, air vents, spickets, spicket plugs, and washers. Additional spare parts include specified quantities of air vents, spicket plugs, washers, spickets, end caps, and flanges. All components and bottles must be fabricated according to the specifications and CAD files provided. Delivery is required to the NOAA/AOML/PHOD facility in Miami, Florida.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation for the purchase and delivery of the fabricated Niskin bottle parts and spare parts as specified in the government file. The solicitation is issued by the Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Fabrication of Components for Niskin Bottles Requisition NRMAD000-23-01273

Note: No Contractor will access NOAA’s IT network or IT resources.

Purpose:

This request is for the fabrication of 24 Niskin bottles and spare parts. These Niskin bottles are for use on research vessels. The bottles are designed so the end caps can be released via an electric signal from the ship’s computer control unit, closing the bottles and capturing a contained sample of water from various depths of interest in the water column. The capability to sample water from the sea surface down to depths as deep as 6000 meters requires extremely specialized equipment. Each of the 24 bottles can be remotely closed from the ship one at a time to sample water at different depths of the water column. Once back on the ship’s deck, the bottles are designed to contain the water samples in their air-tight and watertight chamber. Since the water collected by Niskin bottles are used for measuring many physical characteristics such as salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrient concentrations, and dissolved organic and inorganic carbon, the bottles must be fabricated with close tolerance so that the samples taken are not contaminated.

Specifications/Requirements:

This Job is for one (1) set of 24 bottles plus spare parts. On Sheet 5 of 5 CAD file:

{UH}{CTD}{12L Bottle Fittings}{0}{0}{W} cross hatch knurling has been added. The bottle weld details sheet has been included as a reference on sheet 2 of 5 CAD File:

VENTS{}{CTD}{12L Bottle Main}{2}{w}; however, no PVC welding will be required as it will be performed by another vendor. Care must be taken for the tolerance on the parts of the spicket and spicket plug sheets 2 and 3 of CAD file:{UH}{CTD}{12L Bottle Fittings}{0}{0}{W} as these parts have sealing surfaces, especially the inside thru-hole of the spicket plug.

Below find the total number of required parts that will be needed to assemble 24 Niskin bottles and the spare parts needed:
