Specifications and Minimum Feature Requirements
Overview:
The Molecular Foundry seeks one 500 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometer system, a workhorse instrument that is indispensable for the identification and characterization of molecular structures. The key features must include:
1. An NMR digital console operating at a proton frequency of 500 MHz.
2. A magnet system with magnet supports with high liquid nitrogen and liquid helium hold times.
3. An autosampler that allows for multiple sample loading.
4. An integrated solid state probe that is compatible with an autosampler that is fully automated to allow for remote operation.
5. An advanced operating software for data acquisition, processing, and analysis.
6. A fully integrated and compact system that can utilize existing NMR probes and offer robust reliability, precise measurement, and automated capabilities.
System Specifications:
NMR console
● The instrument should have a high intermediate frequency signal generation and detection to reduce noise and interference between observed and decoupled nuclei.
● The system should be modular and upgradable with a low signal to noise ratio. An integrated software should be able to control the console that connects to the internal and external devices such as sample changers, probe platforms, magnet, solid state NMR accessories, etc.
● The sample temperature technology should provide precise sample temperature regulation throughout the NMR experiments, avoiding temperature-dependent fluctuations.
● Maximum performance is expected for both liquid NMR spectroscopy as well as in the solid state with automatic tuning and matching capability that leads to faster acquisition times and improves overall throughput.
● The console must consist of at least a 2 channel system of independent radiofrequency (RF) transmit and receive paths to control and detect different nuclei.
● Sufficient for routine experiments: Ideal for standard 1D and 2D experiments involving two nuclei (e.g., ¹H and ¹³C, or ¹H and ¹⁵N) and suitable for biomolecular or organic chemistry workflows.
Magnet system
● Should have a long hold time and low boil off rate that minimizes the loss of liquid helium to reduce the frequency of liquid helium fills throughout the year or relying on expensive helium regeneration systems that are shown not to be very efficient.
● Magnet system constructed with robust materials with built-in suppression system to reduce external vibrational disturbances that can affect the magnetic field and hence the resolution of the NMR peaks.
● The magnet support must have structural stability and have vibrational damping to reduce effects of foot traffic, machinery, HVAC systems.
● The system ports should provide easy access to cryogen ports for easy and convenient liquid nitrogen and liquid helium filling.
Autosampler
A multi-position autosampler is needed to improve efficiency, increase throughput, reduce operator time, allow for remote use, and reduce the dependence on human attention.
Probe system
● The solid-state probe system should have a built in integrated automated tuning, and matching adjustment.
● It should be compatible with the autosampler for full automation and remote operation.
● The variable temperature threshold for the probe should have a range of at least 0oC to +100oC.
● The probe must be a broadband type that can tunable to a range of nuclei such as H, C, B, N, S, Si, P, and F at a minimum.
Operating software and hardware
Instrument control and data processing hardware and software:
A pc workstation with monitor for data acquisition with all software installed should be included. The acquisition pc should have the following minimum configuration:
• Operating System: English version of Microsoft Windows
● Intel Xeon E5-1620v4 (up to 3.8 GHz), Quad Core
● 16GB DDR4-2133 (2x8 GB) RAM
● NVIDIA Quadro K620 2 GB GFX graphics card
● 2TB 7200 RPM SATA HDD
● Integrated Intel I-218 Gbit LAN (SPECT)
● Intel Ethernet I210-T1 PCIe NIC (NET)
● 9.5 mm Slim SuperMulti DVDRW 1st ODD
● USB US-Keyboard and USB mouse
● NMR WS MONITOR 24" LCD
● The system must include data analysis software that will allow state of the art quantification using the most common data analysis algorithms.
● The software must include a Data Interface feature allowing for automated exchange of data with a third-party system with vendor agnostic file formats.
● A processing system that has the ability to be AI driven for data processing for structural elucidation.
● A walk-up sample submission, acquisition, and data reporting software solution should be provided with a minimum of two instrument licenses. The system should allow for non-expert users to easily enter sample data, select the most appropriate method for analysis, and automate the acquisition, processing, and reporting of results. This system should at a minimum provide a customized report in PDF format. Ideally this software would be web enabled and allow data retrieval and analysis via a web browser. The solution should allow for administrative user and data management.
