Background:

The Physical Measurement Laboratory (PML), a major operating unit of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), sets the definitive U.S. standards for nearly every kind of measurement in modern life, sometimes across more than 20 orders of magnitude. PML is a world leader in the science of physical measurement, devising procedures and tools that make continual progress possible. PML relies on several in-house developed software applications such as the System for Project Management (SPM) to track publications, travel, and project status reports provided to management. It supports the eNIST objective to eliminate paper and to automate manual, labor intensive administrative activities. The applications also serve as a data warehouse for publications and reports, providing backups of all data stored. In addition, the PML has additional software packages that require updates to improve features and extend the useful lifetime.

mailto:forest.crumpler@nist.gov

As part of PML, the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST) NanoFab provides researchers with rapid access to state-of-the-art, commercial nanoscale measurement and fabrication tools and methods, along with associated technical expertise, at economical hourly rates. It is well equipped to process and characterize a wide range of nanoscale materials, structures, and devices. The CNST relies on several in-house developed software applications to track projects, record lab usage, and produce billing. The software runs on a variety of servers to provide access internal to NIST and external to the public.

PML and the CNST seek a vendor that can provide support to make needed updates to the software applications and maintain the server infrastructure to ensure up-to-date and continuous availability.
