About this file

This is a Requirements and Specifications document for a photon counting imaging tube to support NIST's quantum information science research. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Acquisition Management Division, is issuing this requirement as a Request for Quotation (RFQ) under solicitation number NB688000-26-00692. The ion trapping group requires a sensitive imaging detector capable of measuring weak, laser-induced ion fluorescence from trapped ion crystals, with the detector enabling individual ion detection within the crystal. The device must provide time coordinate resolution better than 5 nanoseconds in addition to x, y photon coordinates, with effective spatial resolution of 400 pixels across the input diameter and ability to process continuous streams exceeding 1 million photon detection events per second without signal degradation.

The specification calls for a single photon-counting imaging tube compatible with the existing Photek model IPD340 tube dimensions and electrical connections, featuring a bialkali photocathode with quantum efficiency of 20% at 350 nanometers and 40 millimeter active diameter, a Z-stack microchannel plate (MCP) configuration of high-output-type (HOT) specification, a resistive sea anode, and gain of 1x10^7 at 3.5 kilovolt anode-to-cathode voltage. Physical constraints include a fused silica window of 41.0 millimeters, outside tube diameter of 76.0 millimeters or less, thickness of 21.3 millimeters or less, and anode ceramic diameter of 62.5 millimeters or less. The tube requires atomic laser deposition coating on the front MCP for enhanced lifetime. Delivery, installation, and training must be completed within 30 weeks from award. Government acceptance testing is expected to require 21 business days. All products carry a 12-month warranty against faulty workmanship from the date of shipping.

Requirements / Specification Document

Use this document to detail specifications/requirements for an item and/or ancillary services.

TITLE: Photon Counting Imaging Tube Requesting Lab/Division/Group: PML, Div. 688, group 10 General Statement of Need In support of the NIST mission to develop quantum information science, the ion trapping group is carrying out a series of experiments employing trapped ion crystals as registers for storing quantum information. This work requires sensitive imaging detectors for measuring weak, laser-induced ion fluorescence. The detector will enable the detection of individual ions within the crystal. Because the ion crystal undergoes a periodic rotation, we require a detector or imaging tube that provides a time coordinate t, with better than 5 nanosecond resolution, in addition to the x, y coordinate of each detected photon. The spatial resolution of the detector should enable an effective 400 pixels across the input diameter of the tube. The tube must be able to process a continuous stream of > 1 million photon detection events per second that are evenly disctributed across the photocathode without degradation of the processed signal.

This purchase is for an imaging, photon-counting tube that will replace the existing tube in a RoentDek detector system with a HexAnode readout. The existing tube is a Photek Device type IPD340. The tube must be compatible with the size, dimensions, and electrical connections of the Photek type IPD340 tube.
